Hey guys! Keith's TV rating has dropped to a new low. Now is the time for us
to help out by simply switching on to Current TV, even it's only for a few minutes, Mo. - Fr.
between 8 & 9 p.m., before returning to your favorite program. Democrats don't yet have a
powerful TV station. We're lucky to have any Dem. TV station at all. Let's all help to make
it into a powerful one. Now is the time when we are all needed!

1. I DVR and/or watch his show nightly....
...I don't think there's anything wrong with the show, and the fact that he has any size audience at all is remarkable given the 'handicap' of being on a relatively small and unknown network...

6. I think DVR-ing "counts" in the tabulation, but only if you
actually watch it after it's recorded? Something like that. I recall (obviously not too well) Ed talking about it and encouraging people to record his show.

60. Current TV is going to operate without ratings for a long time. Encourage Keith
and get over it--they aren't even on all cable systems yet. Their problem is to keep on making quality news TV and ignore the ratings. Apples and Oranges people.

Keith is in for the long haul. They are building a broader news identity with keith as head of the news division, and that will take time. He's only been there 3 months or so.

but when you blow up a lower cable channel (non-hd) picture to 60 inches, it is not very pleasant to look at.

i watch keith, but it is so much easier on the eyes to watch hd channels. (and keith is full screen, not widescreen...)

that IS why i got the large screen. i don't watch sports, but the hd sports channels are absolutely incredible. and the hd shopping channels...

 bottom line, usually, if it is not hd, i don't watch it.

239. You missed even the main point. Current TV is the only Democrat-owned TV-station, and
Edited on Fri Sep-16-11 03:04 PM by Cal33
it's only a small, budding one. 90% of newsmedia are Republican-owned.
I had read that Olbermann's Countdown TV rating was dropping, and thought
of bringing it up here to ask DUers for help in pushing it up. Olbermann
started working at Current only 3 months ago (June 20, 2011). And DUers
here have heartily responded.

Apparently we'd all like to see at least one Democrat-owned small TV station
make it, and hopefully become a major one. The more Democrat-owned newsmedia
there are, the better would we be able to fight against the Republicans'
propaganda and lies. Right now we are pretty helpless in this respect.
And our helplessness helps the Republicans to win.

242. I disagree.
I own a tv, but I don't watch tv. I watch some things on the internet from time to time, and lots of movies. I have no interest in supporting television news of any stripe, but especially ANY politically biased media. I think journalism should actually be impartial for the most part. Olbermann's show has always just been commentary, and I've never really seen the point.

So what if the Republicans dominate? If the Republicans dominated the market for something else that I thought was pointless I wouldn't think there should be some Democratic form of that pointless thing to compete with them.

Yes. I agree with you there. The present day journalism of the mainstream media
is anything but impartial, and it is 90% Republican-owned. Their non-stop
propaganda has half of our nation brain-washed into believing their lies. This
is what the Democrats have to fight back against. We don't want to come to the
point where ALL of our people have become brain-washed automatons, do we?

MSNBC, Current, etc. aren't actually that liberal, but they give a face to the lie that there are different voices in the media. I would rather have people just come out in other methods to decry the republican-controlled television "news" than try to compete with it on its' terms.

It would be more fair to have it 50-50, so that the people would
have an even chance of looking at both sides of the picture, and
then make up their own minds.

252. I couldn't disagree more.
Somehow, in this crazy world, I was able to make up my own mind about things without having cable news influence me. I remember being a kid and not understanding why my parents were voting for Dukakis, because TV had made it clear that Bush was better. I also remember being very young and being confused by the coverage about Palestine, because the news (I just mean NBC/ABC/CBS here) made it clear that the Israelis were the good guys, but on tv it would show them standing on towers with machine guns shooting at children who had rocks. Somehow I made up my own mind then, and later on in life.

In part, it was probably my dissatisfaction with the mainstream information available to me as a teenager that got me interested in leftist politics. Somehow I doubt any tv news network would encourage kids to read Marx, Debord, Proudhon, etc. There is no 50/50, and perpetuating the idea that there are just two sides just helps keep people uninformed. I can't remember who said it recently, but it was something along the lines of the fact that a two party system was even better than a one party system for maintaining a totalitarian state, as it gives the people the illusion of choice when they really have none. If there were only one party, people would wise up. We have that in our government now. I don't think we need it in our news media as well.

258. True, there is no 50-50, but it's a good thing if the American were offered
the chance of 50-50. It's up to the people to chose. Right now the chances
are 90-10. Too much one-sided. By the way, I am all for having more than
two major parties only. It would be wonderful to have 4 or 5, but we can't
even make it 3.

Let's do our best to help out WHILE THIS OPPORTUNITY IS HERE! Let's not waste
this golden opportunity!

...and it won't be so difficult to view. Keith is the person to do that, we just have to tune in if we have cable. I gave up cable when Keith left msnbc, but i watch on-line when I can
.

12. Dish Network could be a problem
A few weeks ago, they had a big message that Current TV was moving from Channel 196 to 294 (or something like that)

However, it doesn't look like the move went through when I went to watch earlier this week.

28. I noticed that
and wondered wtf was going on. They went from 196 to 294, but it doesn't look like they've moved back from 294, either. Although I prefer Dish over anything else like it, I have to wonder what their reasons were for making the switch at all. It's not like 294 is anywhere near the news block, making it look very suspicious...

34. It has gone through but now it's on both channels.
Ovation was moved at the same time too and now it's on both channels. Probably by the end of the month the old channels will discontinue current and ovation and something will replace them.

It is interesting that they moved current away from the bulk of the other news channels. Now you have to surf past all the shopping and religious channels to find it on the programming guide. At 196 you were only 4 channels away from CNN on 200.

ROKU just announced their FOX NEWS Lineup...but it's only a small portion of the FEAST on there. You have to get used to the way it works with tinkering.

They also have "Alex Jones Channel"...LOL's so that sort of balances out FAUX.

It does take a bit to get used to to click in your "Favorites" but the Remote is really one of the best I've ever used...for ease of use.

44. Nielsen has so few people in each area
The problem with ratings is that it is not always indicative of what people are watching.

For example - a lot of younger people in dorms are never counted. Most of all sporting events are only estimated due to viewers at Sports Clubs. None of the internet viewers are ever counted - EVER. So if you watch a show exclusively online, your numbers will never appear in a Nielsen report.

And finally, Nielsen Ratings are based upon a select amount of people in one general location. In my area, Palm Beach County to the Treasure Coast in FL, there are 369 people who determine what the ratings are for over 1 Million people. I work in TV, I know a little about the ratings - and they stink!!

87. My family was actually asked to be a Nielsen family back in the nineties.
That surprised me, as I am so cynical I thought it was all made up.

However, when I explained that I was with elderly people four nights out of five, and that my son was therefore at his best friend's house most of those nights, and we asked if we could still somehow be part of the ratings, and they said no.

So it does show that only "normal" people who are home every day can participate.

The other thing is that the networks want a certain demographic. Even though it has been demonstrated that the 18 to 38 yr old crowd doesn't "build brand loyalty" nor are they more influenced by TV ads, the networks still play to this demographic. Back in 1994, the "Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman" program with Jane Seymour had over twelve million viewers, but because they were mostly older people, the network that the show was on terminated the program.

23. Let's take a moment...
From the link 'Overall viewership was up over the prior week, but ratings have not sniffed the levels of Olbermann's debut frame...' So the numbers are down from debut highs, but gaining each week in the 'regular run'. The 'drop' is in the 'key demographic' not in total viewers. The 'key' demo is not the only demo, and it is most often cited by those who are trying to make a point that is not served by the actual viewership statistics.
Note I use the term 'viewership numbers' as opposed to 'ratings' because rating matters only when in direct and actual competition which is not the state of things at Current. There are no execs there sniffing at 'ratings' and wanting to tweak the show or get different guests, they are building a news department and a TV channel. They are 'competing' only with themselves, realistically.
Another thing is that cable 'ratings' have little relationship to the Network ratings most people are familiar with. People are used to comparative ratings in a time period. Time slot vs time slot, network by network. Cable 'ratings' are all about 'the same sort of show at the same time'. When FoxNews says they are number one in cable news, that does not mean they are number one in news, nor that they are number one in cable, it does not even mean they win their time slot relative to other cable shows, just that they beat CNN and MSNBC. That's it. So their 'number one show' is beaten in 'the ratings' by reruns of sitcoms, by cartoon shows, by films, by almost everything else on cable. The 'huge' cable audience is a tiny fraction of a 'too small to survive' Network audience. The largest cable audiences of all time to not approach half the lowest numbers for any given Network show, including Network news casts. Cable tops out around 4 or 5 million when it has a 'huge event' a 'huge event' on Networks can get 45 million, over 30 million watched the last speech by the President.
Perspective helps. Add to all of that the fact that cable stations are not universally present in homes with a TV or even in homes with cable, and another layer of complexity comes in. Current is available to fewer homes than other outlets at this time. Also, Current is not yet a 'cable news' channel it has a news flagship show, but it is not yet a 24 hour news outlet, and in cable, we only compare apples to apples. To compare Current to the other 'cable news outlets' will not really be fitting for another year or two, when they have rounded out their new shows and gotten rolling.
The first night of Countdown on Current was interesting, because it was also the first time Current went 'live nightly'. It is one thing to pop in the tape and run a show, another do go live every night. It was new in many ways. It is still brand new.

that is being monitored by the ratings company? ALl the TVs in the world won't count if they are not atatched to one of those little ratings boxes given to households selected to be included in the ratings.

I think it is a little early to write him off based on a corporate company model which I don't believe is the way Current is set up.

This is just another way that the M$M and their corporate masters are trying to undercut and marginalize progressive voices in the media.

help out by simply switching on to Current TV, even it's only for a few minutes, Mo. - Fr.

The OP doesn't ask people to watch Olbermann; it asks to lie about watching him to hopefully encourage other people to. Either the program can attract an audience on its merits, or it can't.

i don't think it's that big a problem. it's a small channel compared to MSNBC. you can't expect him to do that well.

the thing with MSNBC is that people are going to be watching it throughout the day for news and there are promos for their later shows so people stay tuned in.

it will take time but they can slowly add new programming so more people watch earlier in the day also and can see promos for the show and tune back in later.

Keith is on 8,11,2,7,3 on DTV CHANNEL 358.
What he needs is more people who are known; like Elliot Spitzer, who is no longer on CNN. Maybe Cenk "TYT" could do it to his liking. MSNBC is locking all the talent as contributers since Keith started; they even brought back some analysts that were not on msnbc for years. They are worried about Keith, they are even giving Chris Hayes his own weekend show on msnbc. Keith is pretty much alone, he has to sacrifice his time off for a while.:toast: :toast: :bounce: :bounce:

Though Current needs to go HD = and fast. We have a nice local independent station here who has switched to HD and their operating budget afaik isn't anywhere near the size of KO's reported 2009 MSNBC salary ($7.5 million) - so if they can do it then so can Current.

130. I don't understand at all why Keith went to that crap channel.
His ratings were unbelievable at MSNBC, he saved that network, and he OWNED his time slot, on an average day beating all the other news shows. With his numbers and popularity, he must of had his choice of any one of the major news channels. besides fox of course, I'm sure he would rather starve than pass Bill O in the halls.
This only hurts him for the future. Nobody is going to want to pay him millions of dollars with ratings worse than an infomercial that's on at 3 in the morning.
I have 3 tv's in my house, they will ALL be tuned into Keith, every night. Come on people, we can do this !!!! For Keith !!!

215. I think Keith is a rather independent type of person. At MSNBC the bosses
tell the anchormen what not to do...etc...eventually Keith gets fed up and
ends up leaving. At Current TV Al Gore gives Keith full authority to do as
he pleases, he is his own boss. It's up to Keith to build up the little
TV channel, if he can. And most of us here would like to help them succeed.

This is the first TV station owned by Democrats that I know of. The
Republicans own all the rest. So let's help Current TV grow into a major
station. Keith's first day at work was June 20, 2011 -- not quite 3 months ago.
We need Current TV to become a great success. It would be a great boost to
all of us progressives and liberals.

Just selfishly, I'd like to be able to watch full episodes from somewhere. I ask the cable company for Current.
I guess I should be pitching people on asking for it too. They tend to react slowly but if people that have access can keep the home fires going we can expand access and help it work.

160. None of the links here currently work
I do thank all of you who have provided links trying to help those of us without cable, like me, or those whose cable company doesn't carry Current TV. Sadly none of the links provided work today. They might have worked yesterday or a couple of days ago. It seems as soon as there is a link to live stream Current TV it is taken down by I guess TPTB at Current TV.

I know they want people to watch on TV but many of us can't. Personally I cannot afford cable I had to give it up almost 2 years ago.

I found links for Keith's show here about a week ago and they worked for a few days and then they too were gone.

Oh well.

161. That 8/11 article is a bit misleading anyway - compares a big debut week against a Labor Day week.
Who does that if they are seeking to be fair? Far more context (weekly ratings for a series of continuous weeks) would be needed to paint a fair picture. Even with that the article says overall viewership was up over the prior week.

Besides, Keith has said that his eye is on the long term.

I don't think he's any less popular. Many just watch MSNBC all evening and forget to change the channel. bur this is bad news because he's fighting for us...plus it's Gore's channel and I want them both to succeed.

195. Is it a fair comparison?
I can think of no better station, and one of the FEW ones we watch in our household.

Reasons: Countdown, All Gore's 24 hours on Global Climate information that is playing (fucking excellent), Vanguard, 50 Documentaries to See Before You Die.

There is no better democratically and progressively focused station on cable.

BUT is this a fair comparison to have said what you did? Sorry, I didn't read reuters, and my answer may be there.

drives me away in a hurry --

Truth is, very little of TV makes sense as far as news --

I also try to watch Amy Goodman --- think all of these shows repeat, as well?

But, Keith's being gone from MSNBC also keeps me from tuning into Rachel and Schultz!

214. Why on this Earth are you giving COMCAST money ??? $100-a-month to the pharoah....
That's one of those heart-of-the-beast corporatist monster organizations. Far Right. Beyond the norms for incorporated Republican.

$100 a month for what ? There's alternatives :::

1. For some $40 there's the WiFire wi-fi super-antenna. The range is supposed to be 1,000-feet. If you're in a city you can usually find a free wi-fi hook up for internet.

2. Do you really need cable tv so bad ??? You just have to give the bastards $100 a month to watch cable ?

On the air broadcast teevee ought to be enough for human survival. Breaking the Comcast habit is easier than nicotine or heroin.

$40 once, plus kicking back to broadcast -- how's that to stiff the Comcast system ?

And if you leave the download running, you can watch something compelling like "The Closer" on download.

Not rocket science. Same as giving Democrats $100 a month......

253. I had a Nielsen Radio log in high school.
Had no idea why I was selected. Had a book to write down when I listened to the radio.

I probably totally skewed it. I listened to the NPR Classical station 90% of the time.

So I was not the average 16 year old. :D

Still love classical music.

My guess - a year from now he's already out.
Looking for a new venue.
His personality won't allow for numbers slipping as time goes on.

Which I think is a good thing.

We need him on a higher profile network.

He will get there.
