WOW! Lawrence O'Donnell just asked Republicans to think about what Rick Perry would have done ...
if, 2100 years ago, Perry had been the prefect (governor) of the province of Judea. Would he have halted the execution of Jesus Christ?
Powerful stuff.

1. Like Pilate, Perry can wash his hands a million times
But he'll never get the blood off them.

3. And that's not even a slightly esoteric question at all. It's extremely concrete. nt

4. "Lawrence O'Donnell just asked Republicans to think "...
Might as well have stopped right there, it's not going to happen.

5. Republicans would boo the good Samaritan as well as the man who held him up as an example.
Imagine being injured and being found by Tea Party Christian.

6. Problem with that is that you could say it about anybody
Edited on Wed Sep-14-11 08:23 PM by RZM
If today's Rick Perry traveled back in time to Roman Judea, he would probably have been one of Jesus' followers. But 'Rickarius Pilate' the Roman administrator would absolutely have signed off on the execution.

But you could say the same thing about Lawrence O'Donnell and the Civil War draft riots in NYC. Today's Lawrence O'Donnell would try to intervene and stop the mobs from attacking blacks. But Larry the poor Irish immigrant would most likely be out there cracking skulls.

In any case, I don't care what Rick Perry would have done 2000 years ago . . . I care what he would do now.

8. I challenge that concept.
I doubt that someone like Perry would had been willing to give up a comparable lifestyle for Jesus. He would have to been born with very little wealth and barely getting by.

10. Assuming that today's Rick Perry truly believes that Jesus is his savior
Then I have no reason to believe he wouldn't drop to his knees in front of the man he fully believes to be the son of God if he were transported back in time and got an opportunity to meet him.

But were he born back then into the Roman elite and rose to the position of governor of Judea, there's no reason to believe he wouldn't have behaved in more or less the same way that the actual governor did.

That was my point. You could say that about anybody. If we could take our modern selves back in time, that's one thing. But there's no reason to believe that were we born in another era, we wouldn't see the world any differently than people back then did.
