Tacoma Teachers Strike Day 2: PIC HEAVY!!

Batman leads the way

Teachers react to news of a court injunction. Superior Court Judge Bryan Chushcoff said he intends to issue a temporary restraining order on striking Tacoma teachers until a hearing is held on the issue of the strike's legality. No word yet on whether school will resume. Talk of fines and jail harden resolve of strikers.

And it just wouldn't be a strike if there wasn't one freeper with subject/verb agreement problems. He was beside himself driving past and screaming like a maniac while giving teachers the finger. Then he returned later with his sign when the teachers were gathering to hear the union reps tell us what was happening. He waved the sign and screamed "Shame Shame." As always, freepers shaming teachers by waving their illiterate signs.

And they let me sing. It was awesome!

2. I don't see Obama and his comfortable shoes anywhere near.
Or any other politician for that matter......I guess our workers (teachers, police, firemen, public employees, etc.) are completely on their own.. I support them and would help in anyway I could but I live in another state.

25. oh, i guess my feet do show in THAT picture.
thank you for recording this historic event.
too bad we couldn't have recorded your voice as you led the striker's choir through many verses of We Shall Not Be Moved.
it could have been linked and duers could listen to the experience too.
if the district knew how effective this strike is being as a "community building exercise" they would never have forced this strike. we stand united.

10. I fear this is so
Since our once local newspaper was bought up by the Sacramento Bee, it ceased being a community paper and became a rightwing rag.

The local news is so ugly and vicious, I refuse to link to their hit pieces.

4. Looks like a good turnout
The longer the picket line, the shorter the strike. And don't let the nitwit in the Trailblazer get to you. If he was a halibut, he'd vote for Arthur Treacher. What sort of mileage do you suppose he gets in that behemoth, driving all by himself? Gas is expensive, but apparently not expensive enough.

22. The school distrct just called and said school is open tomorrow
But the union says pickets at 6 AM.

District is willing to create chaos as students are asked to cross picket lines. Easy to see who cares for kids, who would use them as human shields!

The union members are passing the word now. WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

27. The judge granted the injunction. I would suggest that you seek legal advice before defying a
court order. Especially with this judge--who is already pissed that his property has been trespassed upon.

"Calling himself "a product of the Tacoma school district," Chushcoff said if anyone didn't like his ruling, they could blame it on his education.

During Wednesday's court session, Chushcoff held up photographs of a sign he said had been placed at his home. The printed sign said "Support Tacoma teachers."

Chushcoff responded by saying, "It's not appropriate to try and influence or intimidate me.""

28. the judge granted a temporary restraining order
not an injunction.
it would not matter either way though as we have no contract and courts cannot order people to work when they have not agreed to the terms of their compensation.

29. Your post indicates that you should also consult an attorney, as your legal knowlege also seems
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 11:29 AM by msanthrope
limited.

Injunctions and TROs are terms used interchangeably for the court order that the judge entered. (And you'll note that I used the term TRO elsewhere on the thread.) A 'temporary' order has the same legal effect of a permanent injunction--which means you are subject to the same legal penalties for disobedience.

If you think that disobedience of a 'temporary' order won't land you in as much trouble as disobedience of a 'permanent' one, I suggest that you contact an attorney to rethink your flawed legal conclusion.

Please understand that one of the most important considerations in the grant of the TRO is the likelihood that the Plantiffs will prevail at trial. That means your school district is going to win this case.

As to your point that you are without a contract--in my legal opinion, you are incorrect. You may not realize this, but you live in an evergreen public contract state. Which means that your contract, and its terms--remain in effect. You are still under the same legal obligation to work that you were before August 31st.

If you don't believe me, consult an attorney in your state--not a union official.

I suspect that tomorrow's court hearing will not go well for the union. Perhaps trespassing upon his property was a bad idea.

School was cancelled this morning and the pickets were out in force. So now we are all criminals.

They better start building a bigger jail.

31. Why jail you when they can fine you?
You know how this will play out--the judge will give you guys a date to show up, and if you don't, he'll fine you.

Your union will tell you when to show up for work.

35. yes, we will see how this plays out.
i'm sure that you are correct in suggesting that the district will use the courts and any dirty tricks they can manage. this has already happened.
that does not mean that workers (in this case, teachers) should not stand up for their collective bargaining rights. if the contract that is offered to us is not acceptable then we have no choice but to reject it. to do otherwise would mean we are slaves.
and that is evidently unacceptable to a huge majority of the union membership (which for your information is not a young or liberal group). 87% voted to strike and 93% voted to continue the strike after the TRO.
thank you for your predictions but as a member of this union i am committed to seeing this strike through to the end.
we may not get a fair contract as a result of this strike but without the strike we would already have an unfair contract.

26. this was sent to ed schultz by a colleague of mine with a link to this thread:

Great shots! I just sent this to the Ed Schultz show. Maybe we can get some national publicity.

We're fighting the fight in Tacoma, Washington that began in Wisconsin. The Tacoma Education Association teachers are walking the picket line. The Tacoma School Board President Kurt Miller and Superintendent Art Jarvis, through hired outside negotiators have offered a contract that is anything but fair.

We expect, like any public worker that we will have to take a pay cut in these difficult economic times, but unlike other public workers, we are expected to work rather than the unpaid furlough offered to other workers. The negotiators instead want to remove sick leave, and pay outside the work day which in all likelihood we will never see again. Additionally, the contract offer wants to increase class size and what the membership cannot accept is to remove seniority from the contract, thereby increasing their "flexibility" to move staff to where they will be the best fit. This includes a 10 point list of evaluation items of which at least 6 are completely subjective. Tacoma Schools wants this because they are claiming they want the "best and brightest" teachers. This amounts to nothing more than using bias against anyone they target.

District efforts are being supported by the local newspaper, The News Tribune. Clearly this is an effort to break the union. The editorial board is the instrument of a disingenuous message about the union on behalf of Art Jarvis and Kurt Miller. We are members of the first union under attack, but we are certainly not to be the last to face this attack on the public employees and the working class. I invite you to join us Friday, September 16th as the Tacoma Education Association pickets the Central Administration Building.
