3. Interesting, but . . .
given the history of the only time states seceded from the U.S., I'm going to suggest that the splintering depicted here may not be altogether likely. As the seceding Southern states quickly abandoned their independence and formed a new confederacy, so I suspect that many of these regional groupings would find common ground. Specifically, I would anticipate that Pacific, the Federation of Northern States, Metropolia, Atlantica, and Hawaii would probably join together, and might even be joined by Mountainland and Midland, or at least parts thereof.

54. Yes, Missouri would have to be broken up
Southwest Missouri, at least, would have to be strapped onto New Christiandom. Also not sure how central PA would like being grouped in where it is, and I think many parts of New York would also object to their placement. But, it is a fun map, just the same.

51. Never. We Atlanticans..(Atlanticarians? )...
...will never give up our independence. We are at war with Metropolia. We have always been at war with Metropolia.

Cool map, tho I don't really feel competent to comment on it's political subdivisions. I seem to rememeber a few years back, there was a book: something like "the Seven Nations of North America" that had a similar theme. anyone else recall that, or am I just hallucinating again. It happens when I over-indulge in bread-and-butter pickles.

we move further into oil depletion and climate change and especially if the federal government fails to raise taxes to pay for services. I live in the Minnesota area and I do not think it would take all that much to start this movement. Many of us already joke about seceding and joining Canada.

40. Well, that's a story few people know. After Dudley continued to
be more interested in his horse than in Nell, she finally took off with Snidely. It's only a rumor, but I understand there are a couple of generations of offspring from that pairing, but they live in Nunavut now, in a roadless area, so nobody's seen them for years. Turns out that Snidely was really a nice guy. He just couldn't stand Dudley.

31. It's more likely that any new borders would be drawn on geographical and population lines.
The current state borders are a bit arbitrary and rarely correspond to defensible geography, areas of common economic interest, or to existing population centers. In contrast, if you look at Europe, you'll notice that there aren't many straight lines. European borders generally follow rivers, mountain ridge lines, or encompass populations that wanted to remain together.

When the United States eventually breaks up (and the odds of that are 100%...it may take 20 years or 2,000, but history shows us that no nation lasts forever in a given set of borders), I expect that whatever nations follow it will squabble over their borders until they end up with something that looks more like Europe, and less like the splits along state lines that you have proposed.

This map is my own creation. I am a liberal progressive independent who usually votes democratic (although I did once vote for Jacob Javits and a few other of the now extinct liberal republicans.) The map is meant only to be a warning of what could happen if we continue to allow ourselves to be divided by those who profit, politically or financially,by sowing national discord.

And there should be a narrow sliver along the entire East Coast called Atlantica.

LOL. Didn't think so ;)

Under the Soviets we had many more administrative districts. One similarity though is both this map and the miniseries gave S. Florida its own administrative district. Also in the miniseries Alaska was never pacified, which is odd because Russians in the Far East can see it from their dachas :P

61. Compared to the 9 nations of North America
This new map doesn't reflect strong Hispanic culture in the southwest and links together states in the midwest once held together by steel-based manufacturing. Without that heavy auto/heavy machinery industry, Minnesota and Wisconsin have little cultural connection to Central and southern Illinois and Indiana, and very little with Ohio.

90. And if they were including mining as one of the things for "The Foundry"
They'd have to included NE Minnesota, Northern WI, and the UP of MI.

really is what connected the far flung reaches of the southeastern and northwester regions of the 'old foundry'

92. I think this map is more right on
Still needs more nuance though, I think, but to get all the nuances of the socio-cultural map of North America would take MUCH study. For instance, on this map, my town of Springfield is lumped in with Tallahassee, FL, where I lived for 6 years. To say I experienced culture shock is an understatement! I lived there for 6 years and still didn't get it! But I do like the fact that this map ignores politically drawn borders, which don't generally tell the story.

It's old and I'm not sure how recent economic and cultural changes would change it.

77. Oh no - New Castle County is very liberal. Let us stay with Metropolia
Those dingbats in the south are the crazies and the further south you get the more you feel like you're in the deep south.

Although we should slice up Delmarva in a way that would allow us to keep Rehobeth Beach area - that is a very strong GLBT town.

Also if the US started fracturing, I imagine a map of central Europe circa 1648 would probably make a better reference..

111. I don't believe any one region of the US can survive economically on it's own
The various regions would have to align themselves with a solid trading partner that has economic clout. Maybe Christiandom can look to Iran where they share views of moral intolerance.
