Starting to think we're doomed
If a liberal district in NYC could conveniently forget the current situation in Congress and add yet another vote for Boehner, what hope do we have next year? Why is our collective memory so bad?

2. Don't forget, Weiner's office was ridden with that awful scandal.
Do you honestly think that every Dem would've still voted for him instead of some people just deciding to stay home? I don't think so. IMHO, if it weren't for that, he probably would've won.

13. He wasn't running so it would be difficult for him to win.
It is an extremely conservative, Orthodox Jewish district who voted against the candidate who voted in favor of same sex marriage. That on top of former Mayor Koch's endorsement of the Republican candidate made it happen. Weiner was a nuts and bolts pol for the district. He fixed the pot holes and kept the district in running order. Otherwise, a Democrat would never have held that seat.

3. No. Special circumstances there.
Weiner resigning in scandal.
It was not a "liberal district" in the least, it's in fact quite socially conservative.
The Democratic candidate had problems with the orthodox Jewish vote over supporting gay marriage while in the state legislature.
And lastly, the Republicans pretty much openly called the Democrat pro-terrorism who supported the building of a victory mosque on Ground Zero.

4. Victory mosque at Ground Zero? Can't think of anything more despicable to gin up fear
Well, maybe the outbreak of Sharia Law throughout the land. Did those people in that district actually buy the notion that the Democrat supported a "victory mosque" in lower Manhattan? Seriously? We're worse off than I feared.

:puke:
GOTPers are utterly without consciences.

11. They weren't at all subtle about it, either.
This was the voiceover for Turner's very first TV ad.

"It's been 10 short years. Everyone remembers. Some, though, want to commemorate the tragedy by building a mosque on Ground Zero. President Obama thinks that's a good idea. And so does Congressional candidate David Weprin."

And just in case that was too subtle, they did it over video of the World Trade Center burning and collapsing, pictured side by side with a photo of a mosque, and a smiling Obama.

9. Seriously?
That's such a pathetic attempt at a slam I can't even bring myself to point out how ridiculous it is.

12. I heard somewhere that it was held
by a democrat for the last hundred years.

That makes it sound like a bad loss to me.

5. It's not a lberal district
They'll vote for whichever candidate they think will protect Israel best.

Last time it was Wiener. This time it's a Republican.

Next time? It's #1 on the list to be redistricted away.

14. It is a solidly Democratic district
Voter registration advantage 200,000 Dem to 60,000 GOP with ~75k other registered voters.

Total turnout was ~60,000 votes and Weprin got ~27,500

One of the following things must have happened:

a) 90% of Democratic voters stayed home
b) a good chunk of the Democrats in this district came out to vote for the Republican

Neither one of those is a good sign. This is a big red warning flag that confirms the trend of losing elections that we should be winning, post Obama taking office.

17. That's my thought also. This has been a seat for Democrats since the '20s.
I voted for President Obama in the general election, but he was definitely *not* my first choice. This election is a bad omen IMHO.

what you said defies political reality.
