Rick Perry advocates theocracy

(Bloomberg) Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry said America should be guided by “Christian values” and encouraged students not to allow “a bunch of Washington politicians” to dictate how they live, in a speech today at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The Texas governor, his party’s White House frontrunner, steered clear of politics in a 20-minute address at the Christian university, giving a deeply personal talk about his life and “faith journey” as he works to maintain momentum in a Republican primary contest whose outcome could turn in large part on the preferences of evangelical voters.

“America is going to be guided by some set of values, the question is going to be, ‘Whose values?,’” Perry told a crowd of 13,000 students and faculty members at a sports arena on the school’s campus. The governor said it should be “those Christian values that this country was based upon.”

Perry closed his talk with a dig at the federal government, telling students: “Don’t leave it to a bunch of Washington politicians to tell you how to live your life.” ............(more)

2. Yeah, well, I don't need the likes of Teaboy to tell me, either.
As far as I'm concerned, one Taliban is pretty much like another while they're beating you, regardless of which holy book they profess to follow.

5. Every individual is guided by a set of values.
Edited on Wed Sep-14-11 12:06 PM by verges
It is the responsibility of those individuals to determine by what set of values they are guided by. Not the governments. It is the governments responsibility to ensure that these individuals have the broadest of choices in choosing; and that others don't get hurt by their choices. In this, it is governments job to get out of the way!!

The founding fathers understood (or at least believed) that religion works better when it is NOT forced. True devotion to God must come from choice; not enforced by a "religious" government. That is why freedom of religion is guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Edit to add: Forced religion would just erode faith by creating bitterness from removed choices. Restriction causes bitterness, and espoused faith is not sincere.

6. Ever stand over clear water and drop a stone in?
That is what you will see soon from this campaign. He might drop faster than Bachmann has.

8. "Don’t leave it to a bunch of Washington politicians to tell you how to..."
"Don’t leave it to a bunch of Washington politicians to tell you how to live your life."

So, basically, this despicable tealiban teaRoari$t is telling them in advance not to leave it to him to tell them how to live according to his own hypocrite interpretation of "Christian values" if (fairy tale help us all) he ends up occupying the White House in January 2013.

Then he'll (they'll) come out 'complaining' they aren't 'listening' to him (them) on a daily basis for how many years thereafter?

9. And not just any theocracy, but an extremely regressive, repressive one.
We need to be talking about Rick Perry and the proposed American Inquisition.

10. Good grief, is "Nero" still fiddling/campaigning while Texas burns?
Maybe Texas citizens are relieved he's out of the state where he can do less harm to them.

11. Thankfully, nobody will have the temerity to ask . . .
Who will ask Gov. Perry which "Christian values" he thinks the country "was" (not is) based upon? Or will that be dismissed as a "gotcha" question, not worthy of an answer? Because reading through the record in the Christian Testament of some of the things that Jesus fella said and that his disciples did, you might think that a government run by "Christian values" would make sure that those who have much do not have too much, and those who have little do not have too little. And that's pretty antithetical to the banner of the Republican party.

Let's all hope, then, that nobody asks Gov. Perry what the hell he's talking about, because he might look like some kind of socialist.

13. Well, Liberty University is full of a bunch of fools just waiting for some
one like him to lead them to the promised land. Dare him to make that speech at the University of Iowa or for that matter most state universities.
