Ralph Nader: Americans ignore the cause of Sept. 11 attacks
Source: RawReplay
By Eric W. Dolan

After attending a 9/11 panel in northwest D.C. on Monday, Ralph Nader told The Nation‘s George Zornick that Americans had mostly ignored the reasons that the terrorist attacks occurred.

“All we want to say is that it was a terrorist attack, it was evil, don’t talk about what caused it,” he said. “What really lead to it was, one, we back dictators over there that repress and kill their own people with American arms. Two, we support the Israeli position against the rights of the Palestinian people to have their own state. And three, we have repeatedly failed — no matter how much money we spend — to defend our own country.”

“The folly of the military-industrial complex is that it not only erodes our economy and destroys a quality standard of living, but it also insures an empire which is insatiable in terms of the contracts that Lockheed Martin and others want to dominate the world,” Nader added. “It’s just the opposite of defense, an empire eventually devours its own people.”

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) was booed at the CNN/Tea Party Republican debate on Monday night for trying to explain why al Qaeda had attacked the U.S.

1. Can NOBODY correctly spell the past tense of "lead"?! IT IS "LED."
And P.S. "A Palestinian state" was in no way connected to those attacks. Please.

Try the UNOCAL gas pipeline thorugh Afghanistan.
Try grabbing Iraqi oil.
Try destroying the Taliban so that the poppy fields would bloom again.

2. Ah, correcting homophone usage is a losing battle.
I tried a series of posts, not directed at anyone, that illustrated proper usage of such words, and was roundly castigated for my efforts. Poor spellers don't like being corrected in many cases, apparently.

7. I appreciated those posts, and even more appreciate it when I am corrected
on my spelling or grammar (corrected on my political positions, not so much).

It was a valiant effort.

10. That's very kind of you to say.
Sadly, more people objected to those posts than liked them, so I stopped after 8 or 10.

25. That's because spelling ability is only one facet of human intellect.
And it's obnoxious when people reduce other non spelling and grammar related arguments into battles over spelling and grammar.

13. Thanks. I needed that.
I must have lost the cells containing some of the information I learned in 4th grade. I actually forgot that "led" was past tense of "lead".

22. How can you say that "a Palestinian state" isn't part of the reason?
It most certainly is part of the lexicon of reasons why people in the ME see the US as "evil."

Of course "we" ignore the causes. The oligarchy running the USA is beholden to creating corporate wealth by any and all means.

edit: spelling

24. Panel
Nader was joined by retired Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a former State Department chief of staff and outspoken critic of the Iraq War; the ACLU’s Michael German, a former FBI agent who left the agency in 2004 and has spoken out against post-9/11 intelligence abuses; and constitutional lawyer Bruce Fein, who led the American Bar Association’s astonishing and largely unnoticed rebuke of President George W. Bush’s legal abuses while Bush was still in office.

19. Even if we did those things, 911 was not justified
And 911 did nothing but make it all worse.

26. Exactly. But it is important that we don't spend time "thinking" bout anything
So that our "leaders" can continue with the same policies that bring blowback upon us.

Our task is to go out there and SHOP! (IIRC.)

21. Nobody's trying to say 911 was justified...
Just pointing out possible reasons why hatred for the good ole U.S of A exists and spurs people to go to such great lengths and sucide to lash out against us.

We are a good scapegoat and Nader does a good job of pointing out why.

29. right, except....
....there are so many unanswered questions about what actually happened on 9/11 that we don't actually know what happened, or who was behind it.

the only thing we really know is that the official story is untrue.

after we have a thorough investigation of the event, we can talk.

23. Among Bin Ladens publicly stated reasons for issuing Fatwah against America.
Infidel (US) troops based in Saudi Arabia.
US support for Israel against the Palestinian people.
Hundreds of thousands of Muslim deaths because of Iraqi sanctions.

And more.

These were all issued before the African embassy bombings, the USS Cole Bombing, and 9/11.

An excellent book on the subject is "Ghost Wars", based on interviews with hundreds of interviews, all on the record, with ex CIA operatives, diplomats, officials from all the administrations since Carter. It's almost 800 pages long, highly accurate, covering all the intrigue behind the scenes in Afghanistan, Saudi and Pakistani duplicity, and all the players.

30. Yes, and if we'd been more perfect isolationists,
Pearl Harbor would never have happened, and we never would have had to fight the Nazis either.

:eyes:

I'm sorry, but there are greater dangers in this world beyond what America brings upon itself through its own bumbling and misguided foreign policy.

And with apologies to Pogo, there are great enemies we have met out there -- guess what -- mirabile dictu -- that ain't "us."
