Americans Not Better Off Than They Were 2 1/2 Years Ago
By: Jon Walker
September 13, 2011

Are the American people better off than they were 2 1/2 years ago? The short answer from the Census Bureau is no.

Here are a few highlights from the Census report on Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2010 (PDF):

•Real median household income was $49,445 in 2010, a 2.3 percent decline from 2009.
•Since 2007, the year before the most recent recession, real median household income has
declined 6.4 percent and is 7.1 percent below the median household income peak that occurred in 1999.
•The official poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1 percent—up from 14.3 percent in 2009. This was the third consecutive annual increase in the poverty rate. Since 2007, the poverty rate has increased by 2.6 percentage points, from 12.5 percent to 15.1 percent.
•In 2010, the percentage of people without health insurance, 16.3 percent, was not statistically different from the rate in 2009. The number of uninsured people increased to 49.9 million in 2010 from 49.0 million in 2009.

4. Sorry. I have no control over that. Just copied it from the website.

Do you know how I can make the chart a little smaller?

3. Duh
In my small corner of the world it is obvious that folks are not better off then they were 2 1/2 years ago.

This is an economic reality and the dumbsh*ts in Washinton appear to be completely ignorant of the fact that an economy that is not baseed on real productivity is ultimately unsustainable. Hell, they can't even figure out that thy need to do somthing to create at least some temporary jobs.

10. Republican?
This is Census data. It's data generated by the government that our president leads?

Whatever this is, it isn't right wing propaganda, and you can't expect people with any sort of liberal leanings to ignore the situation of the country and the increasing numbers of the highly vulnerable.

11. Not referring to the data, referring to the meme: "are you better off now than"
It is rhetoric designed to harm the incumbent.

6. Reality has a liberal bias, except when it doesn't.
No one here seems to discount the facts of this chart, just the "important" things.

30 years of Laissez fail and deregulation . . . did anyone THINK this was going to have a happy ending?

It doesn't mean I'm sitting 2012 out. An apocalypse nut fascist from the other side would make this situation far, FAR worse. And anyone who thinks "things can't possibly be much worse" is deluding themselves. Get ANY of the current crop of theocrats in there . . . you'll see "worse".
