Nurses Say Letting Uninsured Patients Die Is No Laughing Matter Following Abhorrent Audience Cheers
Edited on Tue Sep-13-11 07:47 PM by Horse with no Name
My comments aren't necessary. This says it all.

>>>snip
The nation’s largest representative of registered nurses today expressed revulsion at the cheering by some audience members in the CNN-Tea Party Republican debate Monday night at the prospect of letting a sick person die just because they do not have health insurance.

>>>snip
National Nurses United said the gruesome reaction from many in the audience is a reminder of the growing collapse of civil society in America, and the need for more humane policies. One such step would be to expand Medicare to cover all Americans so that no one has to be in danger of losing their life because they are uninsured.

>>>snip
Nor is it an academic question. Nearly 45,000 deaths in the U.S. every year are associated with lack of health insurance, according to a study this year by Harvard Medical School and Cambridge Health Alliance published by the American Journal of Public Health.

>>>snip
A broader question, says NNU Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro, is “one of national identity: Do we have — or even want — a country, a nation of common purpose and support — or just a collection of amoral individuals?”

1. Really?!?
Because I have a nurse friend on FB who says it's the fault of people who go to ERs with no intention of paying and who treat her like crap. It's all their fault that others have no insurance.
(Swear to god, this was an actual post in response to the video I posted today)

2. I've worked with those nurses too
It is disgusting.

We had two patients several years ago.

Both had just had babies.

One was an African American single parent and the other was a white married parent.

The white married parent had expensive baby clothes, gave the staff gifts with the baby name on it, and left the hospital in a brand new expensive car (remembering it was one of the larger Jeeps that looked like a Hummer at the time)--she also bragged about her husbands new car at home. They wanted to have dependable vehicles.

One had insurance. One had Medicaid.

One was treated like they were sucking off of the system, one was treated like she was royalty.

Guess which one was treated badly? It was the same one that had insurance...and she didn't drive a brand new car.

It was disgusting.

6. I wanted to reach through the computer...
and smack this person. My aunt, also a nurse, I'm sure feels the same way as this friend. She just wouldn't dare say anything to me on FB.
Note that not one of my Republican family members could stomach defending the insanity that occurred last night.

7. I went through that when I had my child.
I was single and in the hospital alone for most of the labor. One nurse felt the need to lecture me about being a single mother, stating that I was the reason why society was falling apart at the seams. She became even nastier when she found out that my insurance was state paid. In her mind this meant that I was "mooching" off the system.

What she didn't know and didn't need to know was that I worked for the state. "State paid" was originally written on my forms instead of my insurance company because of a simple clerical error.

3. That wasn't an audience, that was a Rethug pep squad
You think you can attend Rethug presidential events just by standing on line? You couldn't get into some Bush II town hall meetings unless you signed a document saying that you were voting Republican!
