the age of dumb comes to the computer.

CLEAN interface Microsoft, fuck you if you think we want clutter and bullshit, fuck you.

Gonna be worse than Vista, gonna be Millenium all over again......assholes in Washington think they have a clue.

And I'm a devoted follower you bunch of numbnuts.

Make it all fucking stupid like the Huffington Poo, BLARING headlines with no substance until you dug through 14 pages of advertisements and links to read the story.

Fuck you Microsoft. XP is still the favored system, you got it right with Windows 7 now you're fucking around again, fuck you Microsoft.

13. BOLD
Right

people using PC's don't want BOLD. In my office (and hundreds of thousands of others) people want function not the latest on the Kardashians........BOLD bullshit.

•Fast and fluid user experience
•Immersive and full-screen
•Touch first with full keyboard and mouse
•Web of apps working together
•Experience for all PC devices and architectures
All equaling bullshit.

Web of apps trying to advertise all at once, immersive my ass, cluttered, fast and fluid, guess what, a WIN 7 with an ssd boots to desktop in less than 20 seconds without hibernating, BOLD my ass, experience for all PC devices and architectures, what the fuck does that mean, BOLD, touch first, what are we doing, making a giant phone? These fuckers haven't even gotten DIrect X 11 right yet.

Bullshit, thank God for multiple copies of XP and 7.

I know they built either XP or Vista off of the NT platform, but they got too 'cute' with it. Just give me NT again.

PS does anyone know how to kill the 'auto scroll' feature in Vista?.....you know, the one that changes your cursor to two arrows and it just starts scrolling whether you wanted it to or not? I HATE THAT DAMN THING!!!!!!!!

I don't really care, though. I'll skip it and stay with Windows 7. I kept XP for ages because they were pumping out junk.

The way it looks now, and yes, I know it's too early to tell, I don't see business rushing to upgrade as it sits now.

17. What's wrong with it?
I've liked the Metro interface since it first debuted on the Zune, and there's a reason why Microsoft has duplicated and expanded it into media center and the XBox over the ensuing years. There's also a reason that Android and iPhone developers have created Metro-style UI mods for those platforms. Metro may, quite simply, be the one truly great idea that Microsoft has ever had. It's simple, clear, and incredibly fast to navigate through. Because it was originally designed to operate independent of any particular input, it's also a very organic move away from the mouse-driven hierarchical menus that have dominated Windows in the past.

I'm looking forward to firing up a VM with the developer preview tonight.

24. I haven't seen other Win8 reviews yet. Not to worry, I won't browbeat w/Mac & Linux

But I am curious as to how Windows 8 will be received in this brave new world we find ourselves living in.

I'm a network engineer by trade, which isn't important, except by way of explaining that I have lots of different devices that will connect to the Internet. Like many others, I have a smart phone, and I do a lot of web browsing on it. I also have an iPad. I didn't even think I wanted an iPad, but this came as a gift, and I love it. It's more typical for me to read DU sitting in a chair on the patio now than it is for me to be sitting at my desktop PC reading.

There are reasons I still need MS Windows around, to be sure. Primarily, I use it for Photoshop and Lightroom. It's true that these are available on the Mac platform, but they're expensive, and I'm invested on the MS side of the house. I also use my PC for storage--it's bristling with internal and external hard drives, and serves as the repository for all the video and music in the house. Of course, I don't need Microsoft products to maintain this storage. I could just as easily have a large data store on a linux box, or on a Mac, or (more likely) I could just have network-attached storage. In my case, I'm still using Windows for this purpose because it's there, it's available, and it's easy.

All this leads up to my question: who will be buying Windows 8, and why? I know that lots of corporate IT departments are heavily invested in Windows, and they'll end up with upgrades a year or so after Windows 8 comes out. This is inertia--that is, there's no new and compelling reason to buy the latest version of Windows, but inertia has many corporations headed in that direction anyway. It's what they've always done, and they're already pointed in that direction, so it's easiest to just keep going. I think that will account for a lot of sales. Another big chunk will come from PC manufacturers who strike a deal with MS to have their operating system preinstalled on the hardware.

If there are other large Windows constituencies, I'd like to know about them. Maybe I just don't have the "vision thing", but I'm not seeing a compelling reason for large numbers of people to run out and buy Windows. To the contrary, I see fewer and fewer "eyeball-hours" spent on Microsoft Windows, in favor of smart phones and tablets.

32. Whaaaa? Windows 7 is loads less system intensive and more reliable than Vista.
Windows 7 will run fine on 1 gig while Vista often struggles with 2. Driver support and reliability is much improved with Windows 7 too. Vista is widely considered to be one of MS's greatest mistakes. You are one of the very few people I've heard who's reluctant to upgrade to 7.

35. Yea, I've become a Vista diehard!
See, I read about how Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided to change things around all over the place in Win 7, and then call it a new edition of Windows!

There is no reason why I should have to learn a new way of navigating the windows system because Microsoft wants to slap a fresh coat of paint on Windows and call it new!

Ok, you are probably right that it does work better in the drivers and the technical improvements, but I don't want to lose what is left of Win XP, I already lost some of it by moving to Vista, and I know they completely ripped it out in Win 7.

Win 8 sounds like it has been completely dumbed down and the process has been completed.

36. If you can navigate in XP, you can navigate in 7.
Really, there are very few cosmetic differences between Vista and 7 (although I do think 7 looks better, especially with themes and Aero turned on). The biggest differences for the average user come from driver stability, security and system requirements. Windows 7 simply runs much better on equivalent hardware than Vista does, it also runs more stably and with fewer driver issues. I'm typically an MS supporter, I've used their products all my life and will continue to do so because of my career. However, I think they made some pretty big mistakes with Vista, though a lot of them have been cleared up with service packs.

28. This is a paragraph from the tech writer at M$NBC that says it all
While writing this column on a Windows laptop, I had to reboot because my machine froze. This reinforced my strong belief that Microsoft’s ability to keep the PC alive doesn’t depend on the company’s ability to wow with touch or compelling apps. It comes down to whether Microsoft can convince consumers that they can continue to enjoy the PC’s versatility without the traditional PC baggage. That they made the right call in scaling down their desktop OS instead of starting from scratch like Apple did with iOS and the iPad. There’s a fine line between the best of both worlds and a world of hurt.

And if they made their OS secure there wouldn't be a need for a cartoon operating system.

Because they are at least half/way stable...

I have Windows 7 on four computers and I think it's great. Like you said, they did get it right with that one. XP is probably in use on more computers than W7, but I don't know why it would be favored over W7, other than not wanting to spend the money to upgrade to it.

I watched a Microsoft video about W8, and it looked nice to me.

That doesn't mean I'm going to be in a rush to upgrade all my stuff though.
