Reid hammers GOP for voting down FEMA funding bill

By Josiah Ryan - 09/13/11 10:50 AM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) hammered Republicans for their overwhelming vote on Monday night to halt a bill that was to be used as a vehicle to move forward a $6.9 billion funding package for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“This week the Republicans sent a message to victims of devastating hurricanes, wildfires and tornadoes,” Reid said. “That message was, ‘Tough luck.’”

Most Senate Republicans on Monday night joined in a vote to block progress on the Senate-originated funding bill for FEMA, on grounds that the bill spends too much money. Although the bill did not advance, it is still pending on the Senate floor.

“These unfortunate people have lost friends and loved ones,” Reid continued. “It’s in our power to help them ... last night Republicans voted overwhelmingly to prevent us from coming to their aid.”

1. If the normal media doesn't cover this stuff, we need to post it

on our blogs, on the social media we use, and everywhere we can. Each time the Republicans block something like this, we need to publicize it. It's all part of the 2012 campaign, which starts right now. I just shared the link from The Hill on my Facebook page, with the comment, "News you probably haven't seen." As with most Internet news outlets, there's a Share link with every story. It's easy.
