2. We're at least a dozen years too late in noticing this
I remember when this all started in the mid to late 1990s. We were moving to Boston from the city in which we lived for 14 years. We needed to retrieve our stuff from the safe deposit box we'd had for quite a few years and close it down--only the bank had been sold and consolidated so many times we couldn't remember what the freaking name of it was to call to make inquiriers! Had to get in the car and drive by to see what name was on it this week.

Then we moved and opened an account at Bank Boston. Within a year or two that was sold to Fleet. Then got sold to Bank of America. We had thought of switching, but figured pretty soon every bank was going to become Bank of America. It pretty much has come to that--just a few national banks.

Like the out-of-control housing market, we all sat around watching it happen. Commenting and complaining ... but never really doing anything to stop it.
