If anyone ever says that DU is awful, hateful, or whatever....tell them this story...
My daughter was in Idaho and homeless. Her health was at risk and she had nothing to hold on to. Her mental health was even more at risk. We were struggling to figure out a way to get her home to us. We feared for her life and we were going insane with worry. Not only that, my husband has been out of work for two years and was just now starting back to work. Money was a big issue.

I came to DU and expressed all of my fears and let loose. I was at the end of my rope.

A DUer stepped forward and said if we could get her on a plane, they would pay for it. I couldn't believe it. This was from a complete stranger I had never met before. It took some doing, but she finally agreed when we got her to realize the futility of her plan of attempting to drive cross country. She would have more than likely been stranded which would have made matters worse.

I am happy to say that my daughter is on her way home. In a few hours we are leaving to go meet her at the airport. My job has offered to cover her physical exam and helping get the ball rolling on making sure she gets the physical and mental health care she needs.

The road still won't be easy, but we're off to a great start.

Thank you, DU, and thank you to the wonderful person who helped make all of this possible. Words can't express how thankful we are for this invaluable gift.

35. Remember how little time it took for DU to raise the $50,000 for Andy Stephenson's
surgery? Unfortunately, we lost him anyway, but DU stepped up to help. Also, other DU members have been helped by individual members or by groups of members. That's why I am always surprised when people post how nasty DU is and how they cannot stand to be here any more.

Sure, some arguments do get heated, and I don't doubt that there are some real trolls--including professional RW trolls, financed by corporate money--who do their best to murk up the atmosphere.

But DU is and always has been full of kind, generous people.

29. That's what makes us different...
...We're DUers first, opinion holders second. Could you imagine a Freeper needing such assistance? Some Cheeto-breathed basement dweller would drag up a year-old thread where the person in need disagreed with the Freeper line, and that would be justification enough to let them suffer. Here, no one cares what your thoughts are on the President's job performance, or on the public option; you're a member of our community, and nothing else matters.

64. DU actually has a proud history of helping others, though your situation is truly on a grand scale
We have pooled money to help buy equipment for handicapped members, as well as computers for those with internet access issues.

I'm sure there are many cases I am unaware of, but DU is, IMO, a fine example of how Christian behavior was intended to be. Quite a contrast from many who claim to be of that faith!

I am so happy someone came through to help you out!

but the truth is there are lots of good caring people here, from what you just experienced to the simple posting of a "hug" smiley.

good luck with the next steps, it must be such a relief to have her near where your efforts to help are so much easier
