norton online backup
"new" computer, pre-loaded with all kinds of crap. the main norton antivirus uninstalled ok (I think) but this thing won't leave.

a quick google seems to give it ok reviews but I don't want it, so how do I get rid of it, or does it matter? well, yes I can tell it matters because it just popped up with a reminder box that I can't close:mad:

For somebody who didn't grow up with the things I have come a long way (mostly thanks to the good inhabitants of the DU computer forum!) but I'm not quite comfortable to jump that "far" out of the mainstream. Maybe the next machine, or now that I have a couple junkers around I might play with them to see how I like things.

Right now I am having a little problem going from xp to win 7 so obviously I am not approaching the proper geek status...

Unless you're a kid with nothing better to do or some sort of systems nerd with a desire for technically punching yourself in the face everyday. Wiping your machine for for Linux is the last thing I'd do.

Now, it's probably the worst software on the planet. I recommend AVG - http://free.avg.com the free version is great and the paid version even better.

16. No I won't....
granted Norton was a resource hog up until 2010..when they made an effort to address those complaints. I've got NIS 2010, now 2011, on 3 different PCs...much lighter. I also run MSE on one other, which has the same amount of memory, and I've noticed no discernible difference in speed..

4. You are probably going to have to nuke any reference to Norton or Symantec from the registry and
delete all file folders that were installed.

Norton used to have a tool for removing the crap they spew upon the registry that you could download.

5. I would recommend loading windows from scratch
and then reinstalling all the needed drivers and software you want.

I hate how they preload this crap on new comptuers. That's one thing I like about Dell, when ordering you can tell them to not install any of it.

34. I share that theory, or did 15 years ago or so....
Wife and I bought an "E-Machine" when they first came out (this was back when MS Word came preloaded on most PCs).

Got it home and DAMN if it didn't have all sorts of crap preloaded.

It seemed obvious that there was a kickback involved from the vendors of the preloaded crap.

And cograts. A new(or "new") computer is always cool.

As to your question, you might try Revo Uninstaller. Even if it won't work for this problem, it's a handy tool to have.

25. the HP
it was really hard to choose. The thinkpad sounds like it is actually a tougher, better machine but I confess the curiosity of what win 7 was like tipped me over. Wish I could have got them both!

yeah it is cool to get new toys - I don't indulge very often (other than paint horses LOL) but this was tipping over into necessity (or withdrawl from bad addiction, however you want to look at it - more in posts the last few days in the lounge and computer forum)

14. I never thought I'd come to Norton's defense
I used it ages and ages ago and it was fine. There was a reason it was the benchmark security suite. Then it became, as others have noted, ridiculously bloated. It was no longer intuitive, it slowed down or crashed the system, etc. I swore off it for probably a decade, using a variety of programs in the interim, all of which were okay but left me with the sense that somehow I was still open to security problems. So, fast forward to this year. I thought I'd try Norton again. The computer store that put my computer together swore by it. So off I went. I couldn't have been more pleased. It's ridiculously intuitive, install and forget. It has no discernible impact on my system, does an awful lot when the system is idle, etc. I'm a believer.

As for the online backup, that's another choice you have to make. I don't use Norton for that. Rather, I upload/update nightly to Mozy, which managed to piss off loyal customers by doing away with the unlimited plan just after my last renewal. I may switch to Carbonite, but then, my luck, it will do away with unlimited. The problem, if you can call it that, with any of the online backup services is the time it takes for the initial upload, especially at anything less than ideal broadband speed.

no security program is going to stop everything. And if "Norton is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine"...then why, after running NIS for almost the last 3 years, do I have 3 clean PCs?

29. NIS includes Safe Web..
as part of their security suite, it works like WOT. When looking at my search results I very simply don't visit sites that NIS flags as red..

I don't know about your users, but I visit different places including porn sites...but they're all sites that Safe Web gives a green to. It's been very effective as I haven't had one problem. The only thing that bothers me about NIS is the price..

37. you can end it by doing a ctl alt del
start your task manager and click the application tab. you will see norton online backup running. ckick on it and then click end process.

to get rid of it for good, you will have to uncheck it from your start up menu. Usually you run msconfig and it brings up everything that runs at startup (On vista though, I havent been able to find the run prompt). Look for norton online backup and uncheck the box. viola it is gone for good. If you cant do it by running msconfig. you can end it with the first instruction I gave you, then uninstall it.

44. there doesn't seem to be any obvious run box in 7 that I can see, either
in fact a lot of things seem kind of hidden - I am floundering a bit more than I expected I would be

I think I got rid of it - my problem may have been that earlier I hit "remind me later" so maybe it was sort of "running" becasue of that - after I couldn't get rid of the reminder that popped up I restarted the computer and that made it go away, then just now when I tried to uninstall it seemed to work - it isn't listed in programs anymore, at least.

If you need run-as administrator rights in it, you need to make a shortcut or look up the switches to pass.
