Couldn't believe it: my USPS delivery guy was listening to Rush when he pulled up,
and not the rock group either.

The mailboxes are in front of my house and I thought I heard this noise when the mail was being delivered. Usually it's a guy listening to classic rock, but this was an actual and familiar noise.

So I went out there to be certain, and sure enough, he was listening to Rush Limbaugh. I told him that I had heard everything when a union postal worker is listening to Rush Limbaugh. He claimed he was trying to learn something about the USPS problem (right, you're going to learn the truth from Rush?). I told him Rush makes it up as he goes along.

How can we ever deal with the problem of people working against their own self interests by embracing Republicanism and filling their minds with the likes of Rush?

1. My guess is...
...he's disenchanted with Union leadership and sees them as getting in the way of the hard-working Union members.

2. People here admit to listening to Rush ALL THE TIME.
Why is a USPS worker suddenly not allowed to, in your estimation? Let adults be adults.

25. In most cities, his only choice would be rush... there is no liberal alternative.
At least that's how it is in my town.

You can hear the other side.... if you pay for it (XM). I doubt USPS trucks have satelite radio.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-11 12:04 AM by Warren DeMontague
If I was working for the USPS and I drove around your neighborhood cranking the Grateful Dead so loud (or say, maybe, Iggy Pop?) you could hear it inside your house, are you saying you wouldn't complain about it to my employer? Really?

Since I'm an adult, does that mean I have the right to assault you with whatever noise I choose, at whatever volume I want?

6. We have much better alternatives. The rich just don't give them airtime because they own most of
the airwaves. Thom Hartmann beats Rush any day. It's impossible to listen to Thom and not learn something, listening to Rush, on the other hand, makes me feel stupider.

17. Thom Hartmann is on radio everywhere
It's not really an access or promotion issue. He doesn't speak in a way that would appeal to many working people. Then again I'm not a big fan of his.

8. He did tell me he was trying to learn about the Post Office situation,
he didn't say that he was not a fan (that's the first thing I would have said) or that he was just listening to find out about the enemy. He was listening to learn. Rush was blasting from that postal truck loud and proud.

A better alternative would be the classic rock station that they regular guy listens to or even public radio because here you can get both Wisconsin & Minnesota public radio and they have lots of good programs on throughout the day.

22. I didn't demand to know why he was listening to Rush, I told him I was surprised.
Evidently here in Wisconsin our postal workers are a little more friendly and talkative than in your neck of the woods.

I thanked him for the mail and wished him and the USPS well in their current difficulties and we left one another on friendly terms.

Thank you for your polite response. I don't know why anyone would want to listen to that blowhard, but I will always defend their right to listen to him if they want to. (Not that you implied otherwise.)

Here in Elko we even get a lot of right wing stuff on our NPR station. Our only source of sanity here is either satellite radio or the Internet.

10. I have an acquaintance...
...who absolutely hates the gubmint. Just thinks it's hopeless. I mentioned single payer, and as soon as she heard that the government would be the single payer she scowled and said "Oh no, the government can't do anything right". Even though I had pointed out how much better that works in other countries in terms of how much they pay for health care as well as the outcomes.

She lives with her son, who holds down a $100K+ job with... you guessed it... the gubmint.

19. Yup.
I had a weird conversation with a parent recently who was bitching about public schools and how horrible they are.

His son graduated in the top 5% from a public school. Now he's going to...wait for it...a state University. Which he also hates.

And he can afford to send his kid to a private school. Go figure.

You know if he says it, it's wrong.

I admit this is not as useful as, say, Thom Hartmann, where when Thom says something you know it's correct. But knowing the negative is often times useful.

Once a liberal squandered his GI bill on a journalism degree went to work at the Post Office in the early 70's. Did not have the guts to propose to the girl he loved and lost her. He was actually very bright well read took great offense to the Republicans of the Red scare. The only Republican he liked was John Anderson. In the early 90's inexplicably he became a Republican from what I understand due to his anti abortion stance(Roman Catholic). Today he sounds like a Rushite quotes Ann Coulter loves W a fan of Fox news in spite of a Journalism degree. Actually abandoned Sarah Palin for crazy eyes Bachman. I chalk it up to Dementia. He lives if you call it that in his Mothers house alone. We no longer speak. I turned down a postal job about the time he took his. I figure this is a version of going Postal.

24. Small world. I squandered my G.I. Bill education on a degree in mass communications
in the early 70s. In hindsight I would have been far better off to have gone to work for the USPS if I could have gotten a job there.

29. There's nothing here indicating this guy supports Rush's views
He was just listening to it. I will occasionally tune into Rush when on a long car trip although I haven't done so in quite a while. I was an adolescent when Rush was 'hot' back in the early 90s and I actually listened a lot. Of course back then I hadn't the slightest idea where I stood politically - I just thought it was entertaining.

Lots of people tune into outlets that don't reflect what they believe. I don't think Fox would have such high ratings if at least some liberals tuned in from time to time. I'm also pretty sure that you could find conservatives in Rachel Maddow's audience too. And that's just the people who are ideological. Many more people (perhaps including the guy in your OP) aren't particularly ideological, or they are middle of the road, or whatever. To them Rush is just another ideologue.

It's not like you can 'rock out' to it.

But he probably didn't seem ashamed because he isn't ashamed. I'm not ashamed of what I listen to in the car (ok I lied, once I cranked 'Teenage Dream' all the way up . . . but that was only once) :)

41. It's like when the kids drive with the music cranked & the bass thumping
because they love their music and wants everyone to know it. This guy didn't seem to care who heard him listening to Rush. At least in my neighborhood he didn't even have to get out of his vehicle to deliver the mail, so unless he was hard of hearing I don't know what the problem was.

hear it in their houses, you know exactly what you're doing.

Edit: My bad. The OP said "USPS", which makes more sense in the context of further conversations with the guy. My neighborhood is afflicted with a Rush Limbaugh listening UPS man, which might be different if the different truck uses different speakers.

But, I know. I don't get it, either. Although the 1st time I ever heard Rush Limbaugh was on the boom-boxes of some lunchbox construction type dudes working out of their pickup truck, in about 1994. The "Angry White Man" era.

I don't get when they live in progressive cities, though (especially like here where there's plenty of conservative rural havens to be found). Then I don't have to listen to them complain about how much taxes they pay, etc.
