1. It is also (not coincidentally) the day the Boston Marathon is run.

I would say, and it is my only opinion of course, that people who live in New England and MA are in general more connected to this small bit of American history, than say, oh, people who live in 'America's heartland'.

Patriots day (the REAL patriots day) is an official state holiday in MA. State offices are closed in observance of the day.

2. when is the one in September?
I don't think I've ever heard of Patriot's Day, before. Are you talking about yesterday? Did they really call it Patriot's Day?

3. Apparently there is a movement in some quarters to name September 11 as Patriots Day.

4. that seems kind of sick
A "holiday" based on nationalistic and racial anger. Right down the authoritarian alley.

7. Yes, and on top of that they're stealing an actual, exising holiday I grew up with.

Teachers every year would read Longfellow's poem...

"Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.
'Twas the 18th of April in 75;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year."

Hardly a man now remembers, indeed!

(edit, darn typo)

that the movement is to name it Patriot Day...(leaving off the 's). I recall in 2002 when that was proposed, and my calendar actually does list September 11 as "Patriot Day"

16. Left off the "s," did they? Well, that makes it completely different.
Let's rename the day after Christmas to "Thankgiving."

5. I thought you were going to say
April 15th

When REAL patriots show their support for the commonwealth instead of hiding with tail between legs.

14. And when we budded off Massachusetts to become our own state, we kept the holiday.
I never understood why it wasn't a national holiday, yet Columbus Day was.

15. Yup
I live the next town over from Lexington along the Battle Road and around here at least there's a lot more going on that day in terms of public celebration than on the 4th even.

It sounds interesting; I should go there one of these years. (Too many family responsibilities at this time...)
