President Bush Offutt Conference on September 11

President George W. Bush at the Offutt AFB command bunker on September 11, 2001On September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush conducted one of the first major strategy sessions for the response to the September 11 attacks from a bunker at the base.

Bush, who was in Florida at the Emma Booker Elementary School in Sarasota at the time of the attacks, first flew from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana and then to Offutt en route back to Washington, DC. Bush arrived at 2:50 PM (Eastern), conducted a video conference in an underground command bunker and left for Washington, DC at 4:30 PM.

Air Force One left Barksdale AFB for Offutt AFB around 1:30 p.m. The Air Force One entourage was pared down to a few essential staffers such as Ari Fleischer, Andrew Card, Karl Rove, Dan Bartlett, and Gordon Johndroe, plus about five reporters. During the flight, Bush remained in “continuous contact” with the White House Situation Room and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Air Force One landed at Offutt shortly before 3:00 p.m. At 3:06, Bush passed through security to the US Strategic Command Underground Command Center and was taken into an underground bunker designed to withstand a nuclear blast.

---------------------------

It was one of the strangest pieces of video I have ever seen. One of the reporters that was with Bush that day(I can't remember her name?), was watching as Bush and about 50 other people with him walked into a small above ground concrete building about the size of a 12X12 garden shed. The reporter said that as she was watching them all go into the tiny building it occurred to her that all those people can't fit in there. That was when she realized they had to be going somewhere else. The reporter is the one who actually reported that, "She watched as Bush went down the rabbit hole." She commented that she regretted using the "rabbit hole", term after she said it.

Anyone else see that on MSNBC last night. I had never seen that video before. I have looked for it but can't find it with Google. It was an interesting thing to watch.

1. Found this. It was Ann Compton, the ABC correspondent on the scene
Later in the day several commentators and journalists, most notably ABC's Peter Jennings, express frustration with Bush's seemingly random movements. After the arrival in Nebraska, Jennings asks Ann Compton, the ABC correspondent on the scene, exactly where the President is. She answers, "He has disappeared down the rabbit hole, Peter."
