Why was Hillary Clinton booed at VH1's Concert for New York?
Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 04:44 PM by alp227
VH1 is currently replaying its () that it organized after 9/11. (Check your local listings, it featured a reunion by The Who and Adam Sandler mocking Osama bin Laden among other performances.) I admit, I first learned about this when I read an anti-Hillary Clinton book written by Brent Bozell back in 2007, Whitewash. I know about the partisanship of the source, but it is true, and there's video. In fact, when VH1 released it to DVD VH1 replaced the booing with cheers. If you watched the show live you heard the booing of not just the then-senator Clinton but also of Susan Sarandon and Richard Gere (for advocating peace). Here's a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial "" describing what happened and criticizing the behaviour:

The junior senator from New York hadn't said anything offensive. A mere 15 seconds into her introduction of a clip by Jerry Seinfeld, New York's finest let her know that she wasn't welcome at their party...

Yes, passions were running high that night and New York's working-class heroes weren't in the mood to be hypocritical about a politician their union leaders didn't endorse. Even so, the booing of Mrs. Clinton at this event reflected poorly on the police and firefighters who engaged in it.

Otherwise googling this incident will bring up free republic and a lot of right wing websites.

(update) Here's a http://www.democraticunderground.com/cgi-bin/duforum/duboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=7114&forum=DCForumID35&archive=yes|DU thread> from 2001 about the concert, see post 33 "They DID boo the Clintons, cappurr." The DU threads from pre-2003 have been scrubbed off Google searches, but thanks to the wayback archive I found some, , .

2. a handful of rightwingers near the stage did it
and it was overblown and played like the whole crowd turned on her. Remember this back when Hillary was still the right's most hated person and was accused of murdering Vince Foster and other nonsense. (It's only since the 2008 primaries that they pretend they liked her along)

the guy who led the booing ended up calling in to Limbaugh just a day later and getting congratulated by OxyRush as the "Dittohead Hero of the Day."
Of course, just a year later, Rush would be clutching his pearls because a few folks booed Trent Lott at the Wellstone memorial.

3. They were egged on by talk radio hosts
Yet she spent the next 7 years fighting for their welfare, long after other politicians forgot about them.

As I recall, many of those same unions endorsed her reelection in 2006.

It's interesting. The right wing's insane and spastic Clinton hatred, so potent in the 1990's and well into the 2000's, seemed to vanish as soon as she was counted out for the 2008 nomination.

Obama got to inherit all of that.

5. and 9/11 back then was used by the right wing for their own purposes , if Obama was not President
maybe not McCain but i can see Palin as VP making today about right wing bs rather than about the victims.

same as BUsh did back then.

Hillary was considered left by the dominant media.

7. She Was A Right Wing Target At The Time
They thought of her as left wing at best and a peace proponent at worst. I don't agree with what they did but I can understand it, given the emotions at the time. I was a huge Hillary supporter at the time and I remember it well.

9. Because of that childish behavior I did not donate.
Today when Bush received cheers (and Obama did not) I immediately thought about the way Hillary was treated.

13.  I remember watching that and hearing the boos. It left an ugly stain for me
everyone (I thought) was trying to bond, then that nasty display. x( I guess it was just a fore-runner of what was to come, the hate and division ... the way things are now. :-(

12. Because some people suck.
To be more specific, because some Rush Limbaugh fans have very small penises.
