Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 12:38 PM by RB TexLa
And people have more money invested than I do surely think the same. With the uncertainly of the world economy anyone not cutting labor costs to protect themselves doesn't deserve investment.

Politicians keep talking about creating jobs, I wish they would speak to us like adults. No one is going to be creating jobs for awhile. What is really gained out of not accepting this fact? There is nothing to change about it.

Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 01:03 PM by gulliver
That's weird. It seems like you are selling shares in companies that are doing well. Increasing labor costs implies the company's executives have a more optimistic view of the company's future. As an investor, I would rather have shares in a company increasing payrolls than in one reducing them.

It's too late to buy Borders, but Bank of America shares are available.

looking at cutting somewhere around 75k from cost.

18. I see
Well, Bush and the Republicans caused the problems to begin with, so maybe they should just open up their wallets and make things right for everyone else in the country. At a minimum, they should fall to their knees and beg forgiveness. That would be a lot better for the economy than cutting jobs.

He only needs 300 million people to produce his luxuries. Sooooooo the rest will be left to starve. Called "shrinking".

39. Sarcasm, I hope. As usual, it's hard to save if you don't make enough to save.
Edited on Sun Sep-11-11 05:12 PM by haele
I'm not talking about blowing it all on luxury car payments, McMansions, cell phones with internet plans, trips to Cancun, and a refrigerator that dispenses ice and filtered water, I'm talking about just making enough you can live paycheck to paycheck by renting a cheap rat-trap large enough for the family you and your wife created when you thought you were making enough to save, paying on basic utilities, medical coverage, transportation to get back and forth to work on, and enough food so your kids don't go hungry every night. As for your retirement 401K and investments? Pretty much stagnant - and too often "borrowed" from to pay for the emergency car repair or critical dental work, or an illness.
This isn't hyperbole, this is what a good half the working people who aren't gaming the system or acting "irresponsible" in this country have to go through, month by month, because the jobs out there are cutting wages or laying off.
As for chucking it all and creating your own business out of thin air- 85% of small businesses disappear within the first seven years. Existing family businesses have been going out of business or were sold off to larger "capital investment firms" at an even higher rate, because they can't compete with the big corporations. Unless you have millions socked away, or you're working a business that makes money from suckers - err, using other people's hard work or money, there's a even greater chance your individual business will end up a retirement drain than you would be able to at least break even with it.

Haele
(Due to medical and family emergencies, I've never been able to save enough to get any more from any retirement plan than perhaps $200 a month - certainly not as much as my parents were able to save. Lucky thing I retired from the military and have Social Security to keep me in a tent eating cat food in my 80's, even though I've worked hard all my life...apparently just not hard enough to be making six figures on a regular basis)

I am a worker and a consumer. Corporations are not people. They are dumping labor and raking in record profits. Their expenses will hardly shiver, they just need to expand bottom line statements. When all of your stocks tank because the casino goes bust as a result of this idiocy, don't come crying to me.

36. I have a business
It had slowed down - and instead of whining, complaining and pulling back - I renovated - spent money, time, sweat and effort to re-invent what the shop offered.

Stupid eh? Not so much....business has significantly picked up with folks coming in to see the new digs....and guess what else? Folks are getting sick and tired of the doom and gloom - utterly fed up with it. THEY WANT TO SEE SOME OPTIMISM.

Your kind can only feed doom and gloom for so long - and then the public will revolt against it. They too, will re-invent themselves in favour of better days rather than pull back, doom, gloom, debt, austerity, cut this, slash that.

Thing is - they will find a way to re-invent themselves WITHOUT THE HELP OF YOUR MONEY. How will your money grow then - oh wise one?

35. you know, there was a time
people, or companies, who wanted to do something, saved for that purpose.

if a family wanted to go on a vacation, or improve their life, they saved money.

many companies would do the same. they took their profits and paid for their expansion. or paid for research and development for new products so they could increase their profits.

now, it seems, everyone wants to make enough money to sit back and do nothing but let their money earn more money for them. people, and companies. companies offering stocks, and people buying stocks.

as i see it, the biggest culprits in this ongoing nightmare of a financial fiasco is the stock holder, and the obsession with dividends.

they don't care how they get them, just get them. they don't care if a company lays off hundreds or thousands to increase their bottom line, as long as they get that dividend.

they don't care if the jobs are outsourced to third world countries where sweat shops make the products americans used to make, as long as they get that dividend.

but strangely enough, wall street, and all "stock" investments, have ups and downs. the worth of the stocks always seem to become overvalued, and there has to be a "correction". during those "corrections", people lose everything. (except the uber rich who knew to get out, and then go bottom feeding...)

but those same people, once they reach that goal of enough to money to live of the earnings of the money, and retire, will be some of the first in line to sign up for social security, whether they need it or not, because they paid into it, and it is damn well theirs.

we have become greedy and selfish sons of bitches.

In your opinion, of course.

I don't dispute your conclusion, by the way, I'm just interested in what circumstances you think would have to change to alter the balance.

One possibility is that we're on a one-way street here, and labor costs simply cannot be allowed to rise, ever. Do you agree?
