The skyline seems so empty without the Trade Towers.

3. I remember the first time I saw that void...
...I was staying in the Marriott Marquis in Times Square on September 11 (I was having some work done in my apartment, and I just found it easier to hole up in a hotel for a couple of days). A friend called and told me to turn on the television (believe it or not, from the 50-something floor I was on, the sirens didn't register all that much). I didn't venture outside until well after noon, long after the Towers had both fallen. I'll never forget stepping out of the hotel onto the sidewalk and looking to my right, which was southwards, along Seventh Avenue. I was used to seeing the long canyon of seventh Avenue, but at some point, the view stopped and all you could see was the Towers. This time, however, it was like getting hit in the gut when I looked southwards and saw ... sky. It was devastating.

Also, by that time all the traffic had ceased -- no cars, no busess, nothing. When I walked out on Times Square, though, there were just as many pedestrians as there typically would be. Only they all just seemed to be milling about, not exactly sure what to do with themselves, and no one said a word. It was positively one of the most surreal moments I have ever witnessed.

7. I haven';t really...
... For about three years in the mid-2000s, I lived in Jersey City, and so took the PATH train directly into The Hole every day. At that point, they were just putting in the substructure for the entire complex, and it seemed like it was never getting anywhere. Then I moved back into Manhattan (midtown), and I also work in midtown, so I just haven't had much of a chance to go downtown and have a look, but I've been meaning to do so. Of course, I've seen the media';s pictures, and I have started to be able to see it from midtown when I look south.
