Daycare owner accused of doping kids' milk
The owner of a Van Alstyne, Texas day care has been accused of putting antihistimines in children's food so they would fall asleep after lunch.

Kimberly Lane, the owner of the Luv N Learning day care, was arrested and charged with 16 counts of child endangerment after someone called authorities and said she was mixing an over-the-counter antihistimine with milk and then giving it to children.

Investigators are now trying to figure out how long Lane had been dolling out her concoction, known as "special milk."

Lane and the day care are now being investigated by Child Protective Services and the Van Alstyine Police Department.

2. Ah, the old Benadryl In the Milk trick.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't do that to my own kids a few times ;)

9. Ped's actually recommend the Benadryl trick, even today.
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 03:50 PM by Xithras
When small children are having problems sleeping, and normal techniques like set bedtimes, diet adjustments, and quiet rooms don't work, many pediatricians will openly recommend giving your kid a dose of Benadryl before bedtime to help them fall asleep. It obviously shouldn't be a regular practice, but it's an effective and safe way to help adjust a child's sleep schedule.

I'm not defending this lady (NOBODY should be drugging kids without their parents knowledge and informed consent), but the practice is very common. At various times, and for different reasons, I did it with all three of my kids when they were little.

14. exactly
As parents that's for us to do, daycare providers shouldn't be doing it.

I had to do it with my daughter a couple times when she was in the twos, she just wouldn't wind down and go to bed. Then I figured out that she liked the "Brothers and Sisters" album from The Allman Bros.

She'd start winding down when I put it on and always went to sleep toward the end of "Jessica" :)

18. My son didn't sleep. Round the clock for the first three years, he was up every two hours.
I stopped afternoon naps for him at one year old (he rarely slept then anyway). When he did take an afternoon nap, he would be up very late. I used Benedryl, but usually not until midnight or 1 AM. And it still took an hour for him to go to sleep.

When he was three years old, I got a break. He stopped getting up ever two hours and went to a get-up-two-or-three-time-a-night gig. When he started kindergarten, it was two or three time a week in the night.

As a young adult, he still has very irrgeular sleeping habits. But, alas! I can no longer dose him with Benedryl!

(It's why I only had one child... Another with sleep patterns like his would have killed me. )

13. Bring back the good old days. This wouldn't have happened 100 years ago.
No, they would have used opium, not antihistamines. Well, they did.
