Millionaire’s Son Wins The Mega Millions
The old saying "the rich get richer" aptly describes a recent winner of the Mega Millions jackpot. On a whim, 25-year-old Brian McCarthy of Virginia played the lottery at a grocery store for a shot at $107 million and he won! Even though he hit the jackpot fair and square, people on Twitter are up at arms. That's because McCarthy is the son of hotel mogul Robert McCarthy, who is the president of Marriott International (and who brings home about $1 million a year). Instead of receiving the cash in 26 annual payments, Brian, who recently graduated from Penn State University, opted for a lump sum of $68.4 million (after taxes). On Twitter, @tombstone sulked "Today's daily reminder that life is in no way, shape, or form even remotely fair." @shaunalberts added, "Seriously? Does he *really* need this? Thanks again universe, always looking out for the little guys?" To add salt to the wound, McCarthy plans on using the money for a BMW M3 and a golfing trip to Ireland. But don't write him off just yet. McCarthy has already donated $50,000 of his winnings to charity. What would you do with $107 million? Tell me on Facebook

3. I've actuallly thought about this kind of thing before
Everybody who plays the lottery deserves to win equally, just like everybody who sits down at a poker table is equally deserving of winning. He got lucky, end of story.

9. Agree! Not as heartwarming as reading of people who
are about to lose their homes or just use it for good works, but fair and square.

6. Shit happens.
Or, to put it a different way, for those who need a theistic explanation for everything:

our lady is fickle, capricious, and She moves in mysterious ways.

16. Holy shit - is that from Principia Discordia?
I just happen to be reading Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea's The Illuminatus! Trilogy at the moment (Wilson's non-fiction work are some of my favorites, I just hadn't gotten around to his fiction stuff), and came across that symbol just yesterday. Had to do a double take while I was scrolling through the comments!

19. Heh heh. It's one of "them coincidences"!..I read Illuminatus! at age 15, I think, in the early 80s.
Changed my life.

RAW was a huge influence on my way of thinking.

If you've never checked out Maybe Logic, it's got some nice material, including his wizened Zen Master phase at the very end of his life. He was one of the great ones.

29. Ha! Now I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the number "23"...
Thanks for the link and recommendation! I think watched it some time back on Google video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7072994186265641301), but I never got my hands on the DVD - which makes me feel like shit, since I enjoy supporting everything that man was about.

The first book of his that I came across was Prometheus Rising, and it shattered my mind. The notion of "reality tunnels," and the revelation of Korzybski's General Semantics (and Wilson's thorough explanation of it), was nothing short of a shift in my entire perception. Not only has he been a huge influence on me since then, I've discovered some of my other favorite authors/philosophers (Alan Watts, William Blake, Jiddu Krishnamurti, among others) as a result of him. And I've probably quoted him more times on this board than I'd like to admit.

Thanks, again! Always good to see someone else familiar with that delightful Cosmic Schmuck!

8. And an Orlando doctor won a big Powerball jackpot as well.
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2009-10-16/news/0910150248_1_powerball-winner-ticket-steele-plans

Turned out, he lived in a gated community and was doing very well, financially.

But so what?

Plenty of people with $20.00 in their checking accounts have won large jackpots too.

Who gives a fuck?

10. The big wheel turns, everyone has an equal shot at winning.
so a spoiled rich kid wins. big deal, once you are a spoiled rich kid, it's hard to become anymore spoiled.

and while this kid won, how many other average people, that didn't make the news, win? Lots.

Meh, while I have no problem with turning the rich into soylent green, I don't have a problem with assholes winning lotteries either.

Granted it's not a heartwarming story of an impoverished family being granted a second chance, but he won all the same.

15. This has probably happened many times.....
Our local Cadillac, Mercedes, Pontiac dealer, won the Ohio Lottery a few years ago. The guy was a second generation Owner of this dealership. He promptly sold the dealership for more megabucks, and retired to Florida...Go Figure...

18. The difference between an already-rich person winning and
somebody with $20 in their checking account winning might be that the second person would maybe contribute more that $50,000 to charity. Or, I'm dreaming.

Seriously, who can spend $107M on themselves? I would hardly know what to do with $1M, except not work anymore. :-)

21. What I'd do if I won the lottery
I'd donate my house to be used for getting families back on there feet, that way they'd have a place to call home, an address to give when they apply for a job, a phone, etc..... One thing I'd ask in return would that they'd be right there to help someone else if they ever get the chance.

24. I'm not rich to begin with, but I'd be donating about $100 million of that to
charities. If I can't survive on $7 million between now and when I die, I'm a worthless waste of oxygen anyway.

25. Lottery rigging. Think it never happens? Pennsylvania had a huge scandal over it.
It has happened before and will continue to happen as long as money is involved. The rich are very, very, greedy. They are the ones who rig the numbers.
