What does everyone think about Mel Gibson's makeover?
Mel Gibson and Warner Bros. developing Jewish hero epic

Mel Gibson, the Oscar winner who has defended himself against accusations of anti-Semitism, is developing a film for Warner Bros. about the life of Judah Maccabee, the warrior whose ancient victory is celebrated by Hanukkah.

Gibson's Icon Productions has closed the producing deal with Warner Bros., and Joe Eszterhas will write the screenplay. Gibson's camp said the filmmaker will decide if he's directing after the script is done and that he has not ruled out the possibility that he could act in the film.

Maccabee, his four brothers and his father led the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies. The role of his father, the priest Mattathias, might be a logical one for the 55-year-old Gibson if he does opt to appear in the film.

Maccabee is a figure who has fascinated Gibson for years, and at one point he considered this as a follow-up project to "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004. Gibson's camp describes the film in terms that resonate with past Gibson projects, such as "Braveheart" or Roland Emmerich's "The Patriot."

17. Come on now
More people will watch Kim's wedding, probably by a factor of ten, than the president's speech yesterday. Get with it! It's HUGE.

3. I've got a script for him
It's titled 'The Fucking Idiot' and chronicles the adventures of a swaggering loudmouth who blunders around like a bull in a china shop.

I've also ruled out the possibility that Mel Gibson can act in a film.

4. Is this an Onion satire?
I see it's in the Orlando Sentinel, but it really does sound like a humor piece.

Judah Macabee? Really? Mel Gibson redeems himself with Jews by wearing loincloth and shield and fighting off the Greeks? The oil burns for 8 days? Happy Hanukkah! Braveheart for the Yids!

All I can say is, Oy Vey.

12. LOL!
How many centuries ago did that event take place? I'm think he's going to have to wear brown hued contacts, no? Were there many blue eyed Jews back then? It just would be nice if he pays attention to the details. I really hated that they used Indian (from India) actors for Apocalyto. I could tell the difference, and detracted from the story.

11. Mel Gibson and the Real Miracle of Hanukkah
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 10:46 AM by Scurrilous
<snip>

"Mel Gibson, the Hollywood star so tarnished by anti-Semitism that a foul-mouthed tirade of bigotry can be called “doing a Gibson,” is in talks with Warner Brothers to develop a film about Judah Maccabee — the Jewish hero of Hanukkah, also known as Judah the Hammer.

Reportedly joining up with Hungarian-American Joe Eszterhas, who wrote “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” Gibson is, seemingly, attempting to resurrect a career which went south with the 2004’s oddball “The Passion of the Christ” and went souther when he told Jewish police officer James Mee, “F–king Jews… the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Although it’s not confirmed what part Gibson is looking to play, there would be a strange poetic justice if he were able to attain forgiveness from Hollywood and the cinemagoing public by playing a fundamentalist religious zealot who, by opposing the global superpower of the age using terrorism, was able to drive western civilization out of the Middle-East."

13. SO who will get whipped for thirty minutes straight
In this movie?

I guess making a film about a Jewish hero is good for him because he can use as many slurs as possible in the script and call it "art".

Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 10:42 AM by bengalherder
that the protagonists-like christ-are jewish.

It's another of those dog-whistle things, the righteousness of gawd against nasty pagan persecution (we are persecuted everywhere dontcha know?).

Never mind the israelites were fond of killing anyone in their path, witness what they did to the Canaanites, etc. Killing the men and sending the women into sexual slavery, or hell, just killing all of them, makes gawd smile, ya know?. Sounds like Gibson's politics.
