Sounds like Jackie Kennedy was no fan of Martin Luther King, Jr
Jacqueline Kennedy spoke skeptically of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. She called him "tricky" and a "phony" after hearing about FBI tapes of him and a woman in his hotel room, while noting that JFK had urged her not to be judgmental. (JFK's own adulterous affairs weren't yet widely known.) She said King had mocked her husband's funeral and Cardinal Richard Cushing, who celebrated Mass at the funeral.

"He made fun of Cardinal Cushing and said that he was drunk at it," she said. "And things about they almost dropped the coffin. I just can't see a picture of Martin Luther King without thinking, you know, that man's terrible."

Of course that doesn't mean she didn't support the civil rights movement overall. I do, though, get a kick out of JFK telling her not to be 'judgemental' about King's affairs!!

1. Who on earth could fault Jackie for being sensitive towards...
criticism of her murdered husband's funeral--not to mention towards extra-marital affairs. I don't know how she knew that MLK had mocked aspects of the funeral, but if true, how sad that she became aware of it.

No, I can't blame her at all.

2. Yup. If we'd had Twitter then, there'd be no Martin Luther King Day.
Because the judgmental moral police would have trashed everything he did in public life because of his adultery. Just like Jackie.

We may lose Weiner's seat to the very moral tea party, btw. Ain't we righteous and clever.

3. Having personal differences with a person's behavior does not always equate

to withdrawing support. Most mature adults can separate the two. Just as most of us have with former Presidents Clinton and John Kennedy--given all we now have come to know about him as well. Yes, I know some, can not make that separation. All the more sad for them. We don't elect saints.

No, I don't necessarily think it is a good thing to have such ready access to the most private aspects of a person's life and no, I do not make my political (voting) decisions based on aspects of someone's private life(in most cases).

That said, if you are assuming Jackie Kennedy would have opposed MLK politically based on this--not to mention becoming an obstacle to civil rights--I think you are being quite unfair. I think she had personal reasons for feeling negatively towards MLK, but have seen nothing presented to suggest this would have extended beyond that.

4. So you weren't here when Weiner's Tweets came out.
And never saw how few "mature adults" exist.

Although I notice that many clamoring for his head don't seem to be here now. Which makes me wonder about hourly rates.

5. Oh, certainly, I was...
and I was likewise here yesterday for that post excoriating Clinton so many years later--from one of our "regular DUers"...

Not saying you don't have a point--only that I don't think it extends quite so broadly among most progressives.

6. I'm guessing her roll in the hay with Wm HOLDEN didn't happen in a hotel.

Frankly, it took a decade or more after JFK's Rat Pack-wannabe behavior transpired (became known) for me to be disillusioned, sped by Wingnuts' late found fondness for his tax cuts. (How did he do it all with the back out of joint?!1 Actual JOINTS probably were in play: As pain killers.) All of it was sure to be made public in the next campaign or the second term, all falling apart at the seams. But he scamped a lot more than Bill CLINTON who got an idiotic FAKE impeachment for his efforts. Seems like the difference between a rich boy and a Poor White.

This is not prudishness, it's disgust. The other thread about LEWINSKY's being a pariah is too long to post in, but back at the time, despite supporting CLINTON all the way, I also castigated both him and her for being SELFISH, for his throwing away our need for his political accomplishments for a-hole behavior.

And Caroline's emergence during the NY senate vacancy repelled me to the max: Talk about entitled demands. And now these tapes that she traded to get the mini-series off the big networks.

O.K., flame away.

ON EDIT: When the Jackie-HOLDEN news was leaked, Wiki or someplace informed that he was best man at RAYGUN & Nancy's wedding and that he had had a drunk driving fatality under his belt. Other than those, GREAT actor.

P.P.S. - FDR and LBJ didn't let their dalliances overshadow working on our needs.
