An almost perfect proposal for jobs!! (4 out of 6 isn't bad) Obama ignored one and replaced another
So I am willing to give him a five out of six for changing the sixth with an even better one, Very well done indeed!!!

Trade -- Passage of three long-pending free-trade agreements -- with Colombia, Panama and South Korea -- would save 380,000 U.S. jobs, according to the chamber.

Energy -- Develop resources, principally oil and gas, on federal and private lands, and offshore. Donohue hailed the Obama administration's backing of a controversial proposed pipeline to bring oil from Canada's tar sands to the U.S. Gulf Coast, criticized by some environmentalists. The massive Keystone XL project "is a sure thing" that will create 250,000 jobs "in a big hurry," Donohue said.

Infrastructure -- Approve a highway bill that is paid for primarily from user fees. "We support an infrastructure bank" that would not require much federal spending, "if any," he said. Global private-investment firms have an estimated $250 billion that could be invested in U.S. infrastructure, according to the chamber. Unlocking this capital would create up to 2 million jobs.

Travel and tourism -- Do more to promote visitors, especially at a time when a weaker dollar should make the United States a prime destination. Heightened security after 9/11 and the State Department's slow visa process are making some feel visitors feel unwelcome. "People are going other places," Donohue said. If the number of visitors could return to the 2000 level, it would add 1.3 million jobs, according to the chamber.
Sadly he did not speak to this important issue, but I am confident he soon will

Regulatory relief -- Halt a stream of new regulations. Obama should issue an executive order telling government not to issue any discretionary order until the economy improves.
He was short on details but definitely agrees regulations are a big problem

Taxes -- Grant businesses a tax holiday on money repatriated from overseas, which would bring back up to $1 trillion and create 2.9 million jobs over two years, according to the chamber.
He lacked the wisdom to do this but got the point from me by offering instead a lowering of the corporate tax rate, that one will be more permanent anyway!!!

More details of his thinking can be found here: http://www.industryweek.com/articles/u-s-_chamber_of_commerce_unveils_job-creation_plan_25482.aspx?Page=2&SectionID=3
I am fired up and ready to go now!!!!!!!!

2. Wait, what?
You are citing Tom Donohue as the man with the keys to the economy?

Tar Sands?

More job sucking NAFTA agreements?

Deregulate businesses until further notice?

The sham of the "tax holiday" (see 2004)?

Dear Lord - have I fallen into the wormhole or what...

Do you honestly believe that these are *good* proposals?

:wow:

12. Where did deregulation & the tax holiday come into play?
On another note, had to laugh at a John Fuglesang tweet tonight: "If they found oil at Ground Zero we'd see out how 'sacred' that land was pretty damned quick."

Heh.

Dude is s riot.

Everybody has been praising this because Obama said it's good, but when I put it back in the mouths of the Chamber where it originated, they see the absurdity (get it yet?)

48. I had not heard about the Chamber's plan, but I thought Obama's
speech was the absolute worst yet.

Delivered in his usual mesmerizing fashion, but full of horrible ideas.

Obama counts on the fact that people do not, cannot, think critically -- and are deaf. Oh, the Democratic majority is falling for a total phony. And when they finally realize how all these policies hurt them and their families, they are going to be very, very sad.

76. The sad part is , I was a moron that fell for it, worked phone banks the whole 9, I should have been
more aware, I stupidly believed he would act the way he campaigned.
I wanted Kucinich but realized after I voted my heart in the primary that it would be Between Obama and Hillary.

I knew they were close Ideologically but there were a few differences where he seemed less neoliberal, one was his views on health care
which turned out to be lies, after most of his campaign planks turned out to be lies as well I realized it was just his ability to lie that seperated them. Clinton was simply more honest about her third way views.

Now he is much farther to the right than I ever could have dreamed and is implementing chamber of Commerce plans while waging 6 wars (only one of which may be legal if one stretches the law a bit).

And the party is following blindly, changing into a new right wing party to the cheers of Democrats here.

He really is a good chess player however, he is beating the shit out of ALL us pawns.

15. These ideas belong in the Chamber Pot
Free trade agreements? prove it. Show the statistics on how our free trade agreements with China and India and NAFTA have created jobs. You can't.

User fees? Really? WTF?

This is just more war against American Workers sponsored by the union of corrupt and criminal CEOs.

No organization in America who has done more damage to working men and women and their families then than the "Chamber of Commerce" who are nothing more than Chamber maids for the rich.

Taxes -- Grant businesses a tax holiday on money repatriated from overseas, which would bring back up to $1 trillion and create 2.9 million jobs over two years, according to the chamber.

FDR solved this problem once for us already. Right wingers are just too proud to admit it. In fact, every lurch to the right brings more economic devastation. The chamber of commerce and the "new" democratic and republican parties are at war against US workers and their kids.

How about this proposal - Chamber of Commerce keeps their fingers out of our legislation.

Tax holiday for billionaire CEOs who are exploiting slave labor in Asia? How about we through the traitorous CEO bastards in jail for selling intellectual property and trade secrets to communist China?

We need to learn to be responsible enough to have chickens by raising them ourselves, eggs are expensive enough damn it! With a 3 cent tax break on those eggs you can be an entrepreneur and earn the damn chicken yourself!

The one in the sig line just has to be a link (to a picture on the net, photobucket can hold one for you) that you type instead of, or in addition to, the text of your signature.

Just take your time when you are bored and experiment a little, it will seem easy after a while, I know the "it will seem easy" part sounds like bull, but I started out knowing nothing at all and now I can write entire websites without any schooling in the subject.

You can and will figure out whatever you need to in order to do what you want to.

47. You forgot to mention bankrupting the Social Security trust fund
and cheating seniors by excusing younger, working people from paying their payroll (read FICA, understand Social Security Trust Fund) taxes.

I think the plan stinks.

Since when do trade agreements mean exports. And do you realize that every trade agreement binds us to permit an international trade court to override local, state and even federal laws in order to comply with the trade court's interpretation of the trade agreement? To me, that means that every time we sign a trade agreement we give up a little of our democracy, a little of our self-government, a little of our national sovereignty.

I support alternative energy and oppose more pipelines. We have had several leaks in pipelines recently. Why would we build more. And the last thing we need in earthquake-prone Southern California is more pipelines.

Infrastructure -- more privatization and FEES FOR DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS. I suppose the government is going to use the right of eminent domain to take land, pay the current (low, low, low) market value of the land to the owner and then hand that land (bought with taxpayers' money) to private companies so that they can profit from the public resources they are using. That is a huge step backwards into the Middle Ages when you had to pay a charge to enter certain towns, and robbers took possession of roads and charged you to pass across the road.

(Taxes

Towns had to pay taxes to the king or local lord. Taxes were raised from tradesmen and visitors to the town. Gatehouses made it easy to collect taxes as everyone had to pass through a gate to enter or leave. Taxes had to be paid on all the goods that were to be sold in the markets and fairs. Where the town was next to a river the gatehouses were sometimes built in the middle of the bridges; the river acting as a natural moat.")

http://www.timeref.com/townlife.htm

Note that the towns collected the taxes and passed them on to the nobleman and to the king. We will be passing the money, the taxes on to the rich corporations that fund the roads. Who is going to pay to police these roads? I hope that cost will not be imposed on taxpayers if private companies are getting the proceeds of the fees paid to use the roads. This is an undemocratic idea -- again -- just like the trade deals.

Travel and tourism. -- Great idea.

Regulatory Relief is another horrible idea. I guess people have forgotten Three-Mile Island, the BP Spill, Love Canal, Santa Susannah, and the many, many, many other dangerous toxic spills. Anyone who supports this believes in the tooth fairy. This will result in disasters you cannot imagine. We already suffered a terrible financial collapse due to deregulation of the investment and banking industry.

Tax holidays for wealthy tax cheats. If you don't have much money and don't pay your taxes -- even if it is a mistake -- you have to pay fines. Why should the wealthy get this special deal? Because they cheat by taking their money overseas? And do you really think that wealthy people will bring their money back just because they get tax relief if they do? The tax relief they get by leaving it overseas is much greater than the tax relief they will get if they bring it back. I seriously doubt that any president will have the integrity to actually fine or imprison their rich buddies for evading taxes by "investing" overseas. Won't happen. This tax holiday is in the plan just for show.

I think the Obama jobs bill is an accounting bungle. Bad idea. Wimpy policies. Ugh!

49. You are in the minority here, Democrat is the New Republican now, (I agree with you BTW)
I just wanted to make it clear where the jobs plan originated, the entire plan is comparable to the chamber of commerce plan, the one I compared it too in the OP (the six points are the bullet points put out by the COC, that is why I left some other bad ideas out).

I tried plain speak like you have (quite eloquently in your post), but most appeared to love the ideas because Obama parroted them, this post was my attempt to get people to look at where these ideas come from and why they suck, I chose the opposite tact this time, praising what was defended when I spoke against it.

It was the only way to make a point when 98% of DU went into knee jerk "defend the Presidents right wing ideas" mode.

It did appear to work a bit better than my honest opinions.
It was also fun in an Onion sort of way.

74. I agree, but I can not do it well myself (hope someone else will) When I try the straight approach
I get pummeled for "hatin'" or something, they love these ideas (way more than just the blue link trolls) when I attack them as Right wing because a "Democrat" is spouting them now.

Maybe you can try a straight version, if you do PM me so I can support it as I really do think people should be looking at how much of the chamber is in this plan, I lack the delicate diplomacy not to be called names (I tend to go with blunt truth, this causes flaming, the flaming causes my deletion, rinse, repeat)

53. You make it sound like the Chamber's endorsement is assuring...
... when, in fact, it's a race to the bottom of worker equality.

For crying out loud, haven't we learned enough with NAFTA trade agreements?

Yeah, thanks for representing the Chamber.... :eyes:

67. Both the Teamsters' Hoffa & AFL-CIO's Trumka have highly praised President Obama's plan.
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 01:57 PM by ClarkUSA
Both have said they will push to have the plan enacted. They sure didn't mind what Pres. Obama said about free trade, unlike you.

Here's more praise for President Obama:

Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva and Keith Ellison today released the following statement on the president’s jobs speech:

“The President has delivered a good start for putting Americans back to work that includes elements we as progressives have been calling for.

From the Congressional Black Caucus:

"We are especially pleased about the synergy between the proposal presented by us and the proposal he submitted to Congress for consideration this evening. President Obama presented a bipartisan solution–something we can all support regardless of political affiliation."

68. "AFL-CIO Backs Obama’s Jobs Plan"
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka... seemed elated over Obama's jobs plan and his pledge to "go to the mat" for workers.

"The President took an important and necessary step tonight: he started a serious national conversation about how to solve our jobs crisis," Trumka said in a lengthy statement. "He showed working people that he is willing to go to the mat to create new jobs on a substantial scale. Tonight's speech should energize the nation to come together, work hard and get serious about jobs."

Trumka also praised Obama's for rejecting the "pernicious myth" that the only way to address Wall Street's economic crisis is to punish workers who perform "critical public services" and curtail their benefits and collective bargaining rights. The president of the nation's largest union said he expects to see more proposals from the President in the coming weeks to put America back to work and pressed Republicans in Congress to stop blocking spending bills and pushing a deregulation-and-tax-cuts-only agenda.

"Republicans are going to have to stop blocking bills that sustain or create millions of jobs and start offering credible solutions," he said. "We don't have time to waste on the same old failed policies of deregulation and lower taxes that drove our economy off the cliff in the first place. All our elected leaders will be judged by whether they act with integrity and energy to create good jobs now."

69. "Unions vow to work for passage of Obama jobs plan"
The response from unions and other labor-related groups to President Obama's jobs speech was overwhelmingly positive, with many aspects of Obama's proposals singled out for praise. There was widespread acknowledgement, though, of the fight ahead and the certainty of Republican refusal to take action to create jobs and boost the economy.
