A Day to Commit to Activism

A Message from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka

All of us will remember the horror and anguish we experienced 10 years ago. Whether we lost loved ones ourselvesfamily members, union brothers and sistersor felt the shock of a society that lost nearly 3,000 people and was forever changed, we need no reminding.

Instead, I would like to reflect on doors that were opened on Sept. 11, 2001, and what has come of them in the 10 years since.

Working men and women rushed through doors to danger and became Americas everyday heroes. Firefighters, construction workers, nurses and EMTsall kinds of professionals and volunteerswere there not just on the fateful day but some for weeks and months and even years after. And we swore we would never forget.

(Note that I haven't been on much the last few days. I'm busy going through the getting mom on Medicaid and moving her to assisted living that she doesn't want to do. She is 87. Many will remember she was in a medical facility on her birthday back on July 11.)

2. Yup, right there with ya, in spirit.
I don't know how many times we heard that union firefighters, union police officers, union EMTs, union nurses, union doctors, and union construction workers responded when they were needed -- they answered the call for help -- only to be ignored by the Republican Party when it came time to do something about paying for the damage done to their health that they endured while coming to the aid of their fellow Americans.

I'll never forgive the GOP for turning their backs on our first responders that way.

The politicians of the GOP are still holding up the process by adding more red tape and creating more hoops for them to jump through for paying for the hospital bills and medical expenses of the men and women who inhaled the dust of that horrific day in New York.
There's going to be a special on Saturday by Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN about the dust cloud that hung over New York for so long while they worked in those horrible conditions.
