26. Let the dogpile begin. It doesn't matter.
What matters is what happens tomorrow and down the road. This is just a kickoff. There's an entire game to play. It was, in short, a masterful speech. If he follows through, it will be a win.

38. If you don't agree with everything, then he didn't nail it 100%... that's just what 100% means...
Maybe you should be honest and just say 93.77%, for instance. Just saying... ;) try to keep it "fact based".

43. It depends on what the goal of this speech was. I believe he
met that goal 100%. I will never agree 100% with anything any President or Congress does. I'm not about that. It's all in direction, not specifics.

16. This is how a President acts. His power is in his speech.
Presidents of the United States cannot DO that much. They have to lead people to insist that Congress do things. This speech was masterful.

You can say what you wish. It will not detract from the power of this particular address. Now...we get to see what Congress is really made of.

to say taxes are going up for the wealthy and less tax loopholes for corporations may be a little wishful thinking. The president's bill, to be submitted tomorrow, will propose an increase, but that doesn't mean it will happen.

15. For this moment, it was an "A".
The trade agreement push was wrong, and more could've been right, but he hit it out of the park in my opinion. I have a hunch he will follow through and hold the Repubs' feet to the fire too, if they obstruct it. He seemed determined.

I criticize a lot about the POTUS, I'm not a cheerleader, but I believe in credit where credit's due.

Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 07:08 PM by avaistheone1
He really needs to regularly take the bully pulpit and hammer the ideas in his speech home, until this speech is on everyone's tongues in this country.

Obama also needs to go forward and not cave at every Republican move and whim. If Obama keeps the momentum with his speeches and dealings with the republicans and maintains, furthers and starts to institute the concepts he brought forward tonight - despite a lot of the crap Obama has done - I think he will win himself a second term.

To my mind, the jobs bill amounts to the 2009 stimulus cut in half. Unfortunately a great deal of it is tax cuts, which put more money in the hands of people who are desperately paying down debt (consumers) or hoarding capital awaiting a shift in demand (large employers). I don't see how that leads to jobs. Wells Fargo or whoever paying half the taxes on their first $5 million in payroll won't mean much to them in choosing to hire when large employers are hoarding trillions, but it is lost revenue to us.

The great and necessary parts of it, UI extension, aid to states, and infrastructure spending, are all sensible measures but only the last guarantees the creation of jobs. The first undoes some of the damage from lack of work, the second will save many jobs, but it's strange to me that the job-creating portion of the bill adds up to less than an eighth of the whole.

As for the rest, free trade, lowering the corporate tax rate and Medicare reform are not the stuff of inspiration. Maybe if you're David Brooks?

42. OK. Wait and see what happens. Seriously.
This is not a speech of specifics. It is a speech about breaking barriers and enlisting popular support. I think it succeeded masterfully at that. Right now, that's the thing that's needed. Put it to the Republicans. The President, himself, can do very little. He can, however galvanize public support to shift the Republicans off their asses. That's that this speech was about. The measures will do something. The people will do the rest. There is no quick solution to this. It will require another term and a new Congress.

46. Obama outclasses his opponents in responsibility, brains and policy
That always comes across. But this was just as true, and should have been just as obvious, in 2010. I'm not sure how the same (or very similar) ideas will produce a different effect on the public. I guess I wanted something new, bold, and out of left field. Of course it would never pass, but it would hold more of a place in people's minds, I think, than tax credits.
