9th Circuit Blocks Arizona Law Limiting Same-Sex Partner Benefits

By Nathan Koppel

In 2009, Arizona passed a law that eliminated health-insurance coverage for same-sex partners of public employees.

But the 9th Circuit yesterday ruled that the law violates the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause, the Arizona Republic reports.

The 9th Circuit upheld a lower court injunction that has blocked the law from taking effect.

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit concluded that while the state is not obligated to provide health-care benefits it cannot deny them to a specific group of employees, the Republic reports.
