GOP Senate hopeful defends moving Ruth's Chris HQ here after Katrina

On Aug. 31, 2005, two days after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, a Big Easy corporate leader called an executive meeting in an Orlando hotel.

That evening, as floodwaters and social chaos swept New Orleans, the city also suffered its first Katrina corporate casualty.

Craig Miller, then-president of the Ruth's Chris fine-dining steakhouse chain, yanked the company from the city of its birth — it was founded by a local icon, the late Ruth Fertel — and moved it to a Lake Mary office park.

"It stunned New Orleans," said Ruth Fertel's son Randy. "People are still angry."
