Obama OKs Largest Residential Solar Project

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration said Wednesday it is providing a loan guarantee for a massive solar energy project that could double the number of glimmering solar panels on residential rooftops in the U.S.

The Energy Department said it provided a partial guarantee for a $344 million loan to San Mateo, Calif.-based SolarCity for the SolarStrong Project, which seeks to place solar panels on 160,000 homes across 124 military bases in 33 states.

"This is the largest domestic residential rooftop solar project in history," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a news release. "This groundbreaking project is expected to create hundreds of jobs for Americans and provide clean, renewable power to our military families."

13. I wish more states/ power companies would subsidize people's conversion to solar

If you go 100% solar PV, you free up more space on the grid for another user and you'll even kick back power to the local utility via Net Metering. If each power co helped pay for 10% of their customers to go solar, it'd free up room for more customers, save their costs at high demand times, and see power flow from you to them.

I don't understand their delay in subsidizing more people.

Didn't a company that got 500 million plus from the stimulus that does this go belly up a year or two after getting the money??? The loan from the government was written so that it is last on the list for recoup in the bankruptcy so the taxpayer has been bilked. The reason the green energy company with the solar project went down was because they couldn't compete with China or some such thing I think??

Is this another bilking redux? Seriously. I am peeved a company took 500 million in stimulus money, touted by the administration, and the money is virtually gone and even the 700 million from investors is being doled out in the bankruptcy with those private investors coming before taxpayers but they are expecting minimal payouts.


Tell me this isn't another bilking of Americans. I swear we are merely pawns in a massive bilking mechanism anymore. 200K per job associated with the 800 billion stimulus plan... grrrrrrr.

Of course military bases are a huge electric bill, so if the gov wants to solarize itself, it's all good.
