FEC Filing: NOM gives nearly 50k to defeat David Weprin

I noted in my weekly wrap how NOM has been simply obsessed with the special election for Anthony Weiner’s former Congressional seat (NY-9), posting near-hourly updates on the race and all its minutiae. Now we know why: Because NOM has nearly $50,000 of their own cash at stake:

<snip>

That’s a lot of money to elect a man who told the New York Daily News, “The gay marriage issue is closed, it’s New York state law”… “I don’t see any reason to be using this as a campaign issue.” Doesn’t that go against NOM’s mission in NY state?

Though notice the bulk of this campaign cash isn’t really to elect Turner — it’s to defeat Weprin. That’s what NOM wants: A New York “win” that they can message around. Defeating a man who voted for marriage equality in the state Assembly is but a vehicle for the larger drive.
