Poll question: Poll: Generational Attitudes towards public nudity
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 02:34 PM by Warren DeMontague
The threads about San Francisco and the apparent problem of public nudity got me wondering about the age/gen breakdown of attitudes towards this phenomenon. Personally, I don't think it's such a big deal, and I suspect that fears of crowded BART trains full of flapping nude bodies are probably a bit overblown. And I'm Gen X.

I'm curious to see the generational patterns, particularly because I'm old enough to remember the 'streaking' fad of the early 70s, and when I was in college in the 80s we had the "naked guy on campus" fad, too.

2. Here's the thing -- when I see a naked body - say at a beach --
Poop, piss & menstrual blood aren't the first things to pop in my head.

Germs, bacteria & such aren't the first things in my head when I see fully clothed people either.

20. Me either. I think someone who practices good hygiene is just as clean naked as dressed.
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 05:36 PM by Warren DeMontague
And someone who doesn't practice good hygiene is spreading all that stuff wherever they go, either way.

19. I've said for years, the humane thing would be to sedate & stack us like cord wood in the cargo hold
clothed, naked, I don't care- I'm not an exceptionally tall man; about 6 feet- but the fucking rows are too close together, either way.

31. Submit that idea to a few airlines and you just might have a new career in "consulting"
If we were sedated they'd save on peanuts but lose money on drinks. Still, stacking would really increase volume and end that little problem of "bumping". You can always find room for one more.

36. Oh, I'm sure they've already thought of it.
but they've decided the potential risk of litigation there is greater than being sued for all the deep vein thromboses they cause by stuffing people into those tiny seats and then not letting them get up to pee for 3 hours because they're using the 'seat belt sign' for crowd control purposes.

Beautiful naked women would distract the Hell out of me. Beutiful naked men would make me feel competitive and/or inadequate.

And then, there would be the "not so beautiful" naked people .....

I'm old school, I guess. If you really want me to see you naked, then make an appointment and I'll consider it. Otherwise, I prefer my strangers *clothed*!

so to keep us all from becoming anorexic against our will cover the fuck up and go naked where it's allowed and where you are appreciated. Otherwise you are just an exhibitionist and not a nudist.

If we had parked half a block away, we would have been stuck for half the night until the thing stopped going.

28. Not sure what you expected, but...
I think some other factors besides generational might also be in play here.

Like maybe cultural...or familial.

I'm a Boomer, which perhaps might ordinarily make me less freaked out by public nudity than, say, someone older.

But my family was pretty inhibited about a whole lot of things, so that could have a lot to do with my attitude on the subject of public nudity.

There's no way to quantify it with a poll like this.

I don't wanna stand on a train full of naked dudes of any age. I wouldn't mind one bit standing on a train full of well kept women under 30.

It's all relative.

39. Part of my point was, I don't think the trains full of naked people are going to happen
even IF San Francisco doesn't outlaw public nudity, or whatever.

There are reasons most people wear clothes most of the time, and they go beyond 'because we're told we have to'.

Plus, everyone knows how nude people prefer to get around the city, and it's not the train:

Running around with no clothes (save perhaps a goofy looking hat) on in foggy, windy, almost-never-warm-even-on-a-sunny-day San Francisco definitely makes the list. As do nearly all naked men. Naked men in San Francisco weather?

42. Tater and fuji, you're both off the mark.
Visit the AANR web site. First of all, it is "protocol" to always have a towel to sit on when going nude. And sexuality doesn't enter into it, at least for most. It's just a freedom and comfort thing. When you thiink about it, if it was sex, men would be sporting wood at nude beaches, and that is also a no-no. Yeah, believe it or not, some people just enjoy being nude and aren't embarrassed by their own bodies or other's.

where I live...

If it's not too cold, it's warm but there are biting flies. Then there's mosquito season.

I wouldn't wanna be running around in the woods flashing my lily-white ass during deer hunting season, either. Hunters think anything white is the back end of a fleeing deer and...

It's just not safe up here

admittedly there are not many Millennial responses so I am rounding pretty liberally there (but I am a liberal so I think I can get away with it).

Not a very big difference in generational patterns that I can see.

Maybe the choices should be:

1) I have a good body and I don't think it is a big deal

2) I don't have a good body and I don't think it is a big deal

3) I have a good body and I think it is a big deal

But naked people walking around cities, sitting on benches and bus seats, when they may not have wiped properly last time they used the bathroom, is just nasty. This is just as much a public health issue as anything. It's better when dried crusting feces stay in the underwear.
