At Minnesota State Fair, nearly 2/3rds polled oppose man/woman marriage amendment
Via Alvin McEwen, Minnesota Independent reports "Minnesota fair-goers reject constitutional ban on same-sex marriage":

The Minnesota House of Representatives conducted its annual poll of legislative issues at the Minnesota State Fair this year, and among the questions was how fair-goers would vote on an amendment to the state constitution limiting marriage to one man and one woman and barring same-sex marriage for future generations. Poll respondents rejected the amendment with 29.8 percent voting “yes” and 66.5 percent voting “no.”

This was from a sampling of 12,549 people, up from 9,926 last year. Meanwhile, in my home state California, 52% of voters passed a similar amendment 3 years ago, Proposition 8. (last year, a federal court ruled P8 unconstitutional.) But this looks like good news, and I'll see how this amendment fares in formal polls until whenever this is put on the ballots.

1. The MN state fair is about as representative a cross-section
of my state as can be imagined. This is a good thing.

4. Sounds encouraging, but I'm still opposed to the very concept of
voting on the determination of rights for anyone.

5. The only poll that will matter in this is the one in November, 2012.
This is just one more reason that we all need to be involved in getting out Democrats to vote in that election. That's the answer to a lot of problems, and it's something we can all work on. Taking back state legislatures and the US Congress for Democrats is a top priority for me in 2012, and this stupid amendment is one more thing we can knock out if Democrats come to the polls in overwhelming numbers.

These are the real issues in 2012, not whether President Obama is reelected. Legislative bodies and proposals like this one are the real reasons for the election, and have much more to do with what will happen over the next four years. All too often, our focus is on the wrong things.
