If there is only one topic that I am very upset with the President for breaking his promise...
this is it.

Obama Babbles on Medical Marijuana

At a townhall meeting in Minnesota a few weeks ago, President Obama, who has completely broken every promise he made about changing the way the federal government deals with states that have legalized the medical use of marijuana, was asked about the issue. And he babbled incoherently.

Audience member: “If you can’t legalize marijuana, why can’t we just legalize medical marijuana, to help the people that need it?”

Obama: “Well, you know, a lot of states are making decisions about medical marijuana. As a controlled substance, the issue then is, you know, is it being prescribed by a doctor, as opposed to, you know — well — – I’ll — I’ll — I’ll — I’ll leave it at that.”

If you can figure out what the heck that drivel was supposed to mean, let me know.

Now, many of you might think that there are more important issues, and yes there are. But this is one issue that keeping his promise on would only strengthen his support, from ALL Americans, as both Liberals and Conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, use Cannabis, daily and without a problem (except from the authorities).

1. Politicians, especially powerful ones, are far removed from participation
in a culture that considers pot as casual. They do not understands nuance. Everything is black and white in politics. There is no gray. They are afraid of upsetting voters. Apparently they are not concerned about voters that support legalization. The economic advantages of legalization needs to be emphasized to get political attention.

3. big pharma, big law enforcement, big prison complex
Too many bigs against it. It doesn't have to do with upsetting voters. Most voters would give a deep sigh of relief if this particular part of the drug war stopped.

Maybe if a bunch of governors promoted outright legalization it would help. But then you get law enforcement budgets needing the money from seizures of assets..................

7. That's funny! How many elected politicians have I smoked with?
Hard to count.
The last three Presidents have spoken of their pot use, Obama in great detail. How is it that he does not understand his own behavior, his own life?
If we piss tested Congress, we'd get many, many pot positives. The State Houses, even more. They are just hypocrites, simply corrupt.

2. me TOO
Medical marijuana and endless wars!! I think I could be a potential crossover voter if I thought the opposition would do anything about those. I don't, by the way.

4. I'm really glad LBJ didn't agree with Obama on States Rights.
Obama should be glad too,
or he wouldn't be President today.

LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act 1964
That is Martin Luther King watching over LBJ's shoulder.
There was a BIG "Leave it up to the States" argument against the Civil Rights Act back then too.

It seems like the only thing President Obama agrees with LBJ about is the involvement in foreign wars.
I really wish Obama would agree with LBJ on Domestic Issues.

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

Solidarity!

5. At the next Obama public Q&A event, someone should ask:
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 11:14 AM by Fly by night
"Mr. President, you garnered much well-deserved support in the 2008 campaign for your laudable position supporting safe and regulated access to medical cannabis. As more states move to re-establish medical cannabis programs through voter referenda or legislative action, why have you changed your position?"

That is what we need to know. Why, Mr. President, were you for medical cannabis and why are you now against it? We need the specifics because there is no legitimate reason for a flip-flop on this issue. If anything, given the decisions by the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association since Obama's election to support removing cannabis from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substance Act, he should have more reasons now than he had in 2008 to support the same policy.

What changed? I hope we can get a straight answer from a President who knows what "illegal smiles" feel like and who lost both his mother and grandmother to cancer.

ones who are against it are militant and active, with many who profit far more than any rural weed farmer or anyone down that chain.

An effort to legalize at least Medical Marijuana needs to be supplemented with an active public marketing effort to change people's minds, which I haven't seen.

I did see coverage when the MM shops got busted. Very civilized, with meetings and everything. Makes me wonder how one might get as much coverage of something persuasive in the other direction. Funny would be a plus.
