Dear Aliengirl

Some maniac has killed a number of innocent people at a pancake house in Nevada. Upon hearing this news, I am inexplicably thinking about you and the dark journey you are on.

The correlation must seem odd. But I am struck by the contrast of you, someone who has tried to make a difference in her community, her (our) world, someone who is bravely facing death, and yet willing to share her most vulnerable pain and fear with others, in contrast to someone who has cowardly taken the lives of innocents, and then even more cowardly, has taken his own life so that he doesn't have to face the consequences of his heinous actions. No matter what, he had NO right.

What can we take from this, other than a horrendous sense of inequity? Life is strange, filled with puzzles that stretch the imagination and pull at the heart. Truly there is evil, and truly there is the beauty and good that is exemplified by you. It gives one comfort. You give me comfort.

There is not necessarily a moral here that I can express coherently. All I know is that my heart is breaking for the dead innocents, and the innocents who are unjustly dying.

I hang on to the thought of you, and gather strength from you, who unselfishly gives strength in spite of the fact that you have not much from which to draw.

Damn. I remember when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and all my friends told me how brave I was ... and I thought, "wtf??? Brave???" I was crying like a baby every day, especially, for some reason, when I got in the shower. I certainly didn't feel brave. And I suspect you don't either. Scared shitless is probably closer to the truth. And who wouldn't be?

We are here for you. Such a diverse group. And all are here to help you, as much as anyone can help, support you on this shit-sandwich journey.
