There is a redtail hawk
in a tree not 15 feet away from me at this moment. Wish I could get a pic but with the leaves it wouldn't look like much. Oh it just

nailed a dove. Amazing!

1. They do like their doves, don't they?
I've got a bunch of morning doves that we feed. Every once in awhile, I catch a glimpse of a hawk/falcon going after one of these poor things....it never ends well for the dove.

14. We had an elderly neighbor who used to leave out feed for Mourning Doves
and would get upset when a hawk would pick off an easy target.

As far as my wife and I were concerned she was still feeding the birds.

But since it meant so much to her, my wife found an old birdcage, cut off two-thirds of the ribs, so the neighbor could put it over the pan of seed, and the doves would be able to go in and eat without worrying about a sneak attack.

3. There's a black hat caught in a high tree top
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top
There's a flag-pole rag and the wind won't stop

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

King of pain

There's a red fox torn by a huntsman's pack
There's a black-winged gull with a broken back
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday

somehow your post brought on that police song in my brain.

4. Live in STL,,,
have had redtailed in neighborhood going on 4 years now. Also a family of falcons as well. The hawks scared the heck outta me one day. Was leaving the house with my youngest. We have a large oak in front of the house with a large branch that is close to the front door.
The hawk was on that branch as we came outta the house. He didnot get spooked by my youngest, but when I came out, there was a rush of flapping wings, I glanced up to the left to see him heading to the next oak tree, but higher this time.
The falcons would seem to always leave their mess in my neighbor's drive way. He told me they would catch a bird, rip out the best part(breast meat) and drop the remains onto his driveway. He use to pick up around 10 every 3 days.

8. There's a whole family of eagles on Bear Mountain's summit - during summer,
you can see them flying on the air vents, searching for rodents and other prey. It's almost like they enjoy showing off to us mere humans, lol. :D

Just amazing how apex predators can thrive in the largest US metropolitan area, despite all the harm development and industry has done to the environment. It was a fun moment. :)

12. If it's hanging out in trees waiting for doves in suburbia, it might be a COOPER'S hawk.
Had one for years taking care of excess doves when I was in the rental house, lol.

15. BOPs are amazing to watch
Last month, we had a mother Barred Owl bringing her chicks in to the yard. I think she was teaching them to hunt as we have a lot of mice and moles around. It's a shame all the pics I took turned out so bad.

16. I saw a Gosshawk nail one of our chickens once, it was astounding
Edited on Tue Sep-06-11 02:26 PM by ThomWV
Early morning and I was in the kitchen getting a glass of water and just sort of looking out the window blankly. We had chickens back then, Rhode Island Reds, and there was a laying hen pecking around just outside. Wham! Here came a hawk, bigger than any I've ever seen, and with one hit of the tallons broke the chicken's neck. Then it sort of hopped up on the chicken, grasped it with its tallons and flapped like hell taking the chicken into a nearby pine tree's branches. There, in about three heart-beats, he rearranged his (or her) load and then flew off with the prize. All I could do was stand there with my jaw on the floor. The whole thing didn't take ten seconds, but I'll remember it for life.
