Satirical bake sale asks banks to spare schools millions in interest

2 September 2011

MINNEAPOLIS - More than 30 parents, children and school staff held a “million dollar-a-cookie bake sale” in front of Wells Fargo’s downtown Minneapolis offices Thursday.

Families held a bake sale in front of Wells Fargo Thursday to dramatize the funding crisis facing schools.

The sale dramatized the funds that will be drained from schools by interest and fees as districts borrow to cover the “funding shift” in the most recent state budget.

“We are hoping that Wells Fargo’s Minnesota CEO Jon Campbell and the other bank executives will come down and donate a fraction of their hefty compensation in exchange for these very tasty baked goods so that Minnesota school children don’t have to suffer further cutbacks,” said Leif Grina, staff director of SEIU Local 284, a statewide union of education support staff that organized the event.

“Better yet, we are asking Wells Fargo and other financial institutions to refrain from profiting at the expense of Minnesota school children who have been hit with education funding cuts again.”

The 2011 Minnesota State budget forces districts to borrow millions dollars to make up for another $700 million ‘funding shift.

1. K/R. Fully one in four Americans is a student, why are we fucking having BAKE SALES???
Surely other things need attention, like our infrastructure, but the level of neglect our schools experience is really just beyond shameful.
