our MN forest fire fighters going out to Montana when they had grass fires there some years back. Of course our National Guard was home then instead of overseas. But there must be other states that will come. Has the governor asked other states for help?

BASTROP, Texas (AP) -- Calmer winds should help firefighters battling a wildfire that has destroyed nearly 500 homes in Central Texas.

Texas Forest Service spokeswoman Victoria Koenig says it is too early to say how much progress was made fighting the wildfire overnight, but that there are no winds early Tuesday.

Thousands of residents were forced to spend the night away from their threatened homes in Bastrop County, about 25 miles east of Austin.

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/state/headlines/20110906-officials-texas-wildfires-have-now-claimed-1000-homes.ece

Associated Press

AUSTIN – More than 1,000 homes have burned in at least 57 wildfires across rain-starved Texas, most of them in one devastating blaze close to Austin that's still raging out of control, officials said Tuesday.

Speaking at a news conference near one of the fire-ravaged areas, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said more than 100,000 acres have burned in the drought-stricken state.

Perry said more than 1,000 homes have burned since Labor Day weekend, but Texas emergency management chief Nim Kidd subsequently said that number of homes has actually been lost in the past week.

The Texas Forest Service says nearly 600 of the torched homes were in Bastrop County, some 25 miles from Austin. The agency said that blaze was still uncontained Tuesday.

62. Have they appealed to UT or other Austin colleges for help?
I know MT relies on UM students when they need help with wildfires. Of course, they have a huge forestry department, and I imagine most of the guys come from there.

I checked the UT newspaper, and it doesn't look as if the students are being asked to help out.

92. Firefighters please call or check BEFORE you make the drive to Texas.
We have friends and relatives in Waller/Montgomery Counties (Magnolia, TX), and just heard Gov. Perry finally got Feds involved - who are now turning away offers of help unless you have a vehicle or method to spray water.

94. Got Super Scoopers?
How about Sky Cranes? A DC-10? I hope so.

Here in Southern California I am glad we take fire season seriously. We have the Scoopers here and I saw them flying on a fire yesterday.

It's a bad scary feeling when the news vans are half a block from your house. My closest fire was a block and a half away and the helo drops misted us.

I just saw Jim Hightower on The Last Word and he did mention the budget cuts and the desperate need for volunteer firefighters.

I hope it rains for you!
