2. Katia's only really..
...of interest to surfers, and marine interests. Might clip the S. corner of Nova Scotia with its western extremities.

3. Just one Invest out there behind Katia

60% chance of becoming a TD within 48 hours. Models are having a hard time with both intensity and path.

That being said... it's so far out that no one knows what will happen.

And, as aquart said "tis the season"... this happens every year, really.

4. What is invest short for? I've never noticed that term until recently.
Waves, lows, depressions.

Invest:
A weather system for which a tropical cyclone forecast center (NHC, CPHC, or JTWC) is interested in collecting specialized data sets (e.g., microwave imagery) and/or running model guidance. Once a system has been designated as an invest, data collection and processing is initiated on a number of government and academic web sites, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (UW-CIMSS). The designation of a system as an invest does not correspond to any particular likelihood of development of the system into a tropical cyclone; operational products such as the Tropical Weather Outlook or the JTWC/TCFA should be consulted for this purpose.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutgloss.shtml

and from wiki...
An invest in meteorology (short for investigation or to investigate, alternatively written INVEST) is a designated area of disturbed weather that is being monitored for tropical cyclone development.

26. There isn't anything in the Gulf that the NHC is watching
But you can see the line of thunderstorms that goes from NE to the Yucatan. That's how Wilma formed, so it's not unprecedented, but the NHC isn't currently looking at any good candidates in the Gulf.

Only a 20% chance of development right now.

I would have edited the last post, but time had expired.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-11 08:16 PM by Obamanaut
get, what to expect, all with a touch of gloom and doom.

No one will add on to the first one posted. They must all be original, with the general theme of "Read mine, it's the good one."

OMG! Katia is reforming!

Edited to add links to gloom/doom ->

29. Here's the deal. DUer Aerows had a really good OP with hints, tips, etc.,
and there were some responses with even more. All in all, a really good thread ->

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=439&topic_id=1811229

Later, there was an OP stating that a really good thread with tips, hints, etc. existed, and provided a link to that thread. All in all, quite helpful.

In THAT thread, a poster said that it was a good thread, and that she had kicked/recced it. And a very short time later made her own OP with hints, tips, etc., as if to say "That was good, but look at MINE. It was made by MEEEE." Simply 'kicking' the earlier thread by posting additional stuff would have sufficed.

And that is my point. A good thread existed, some good stuff was added, so why was a whole new one necessary

People need to know if there is the possibility of a significant storm headed their way.

It's not even a storm. It's a system with some rain in it.

25. Me too. I studied Meteorology, and I'm fascinated by weather.
Plus I live in Florida, so it pays to keep an eye out.

I'm not a doom and gloomer, but I do stock up on at least 10 cases of bottled water, and canned food every spring. It's called preparation.

And if we don't get hit, my grocery bills are lower the rest of the year.
