Happy Feet's progress

5 Sep 11

When he was dropped off at 10.28 am yesterday McMurdo Sound, the most probable location of his colony, was due south some 2619 kilometres. As of 8am this morning he was 2612 kms from home, so he’s 7 kms closer. Looking at his track over the day he’s swum at least double that distance. Clearly he’s in no hurry.

6. He lost 17 pounds. He regained 18 after his surgery. He had been starving to death.
As for not knowing immediately what to do the moment they thrust him onto the slide, that's more than completely understandable.

Don't begrudge this little guy any attention he got after he was discovered dying on the beach and rescued.

9. The only bigger predators than him out there are orcas and leopard seals.
And he can swim faster than they can.

Just the same, he's such a small creature in that huge ocean, you can't help but worry a little. But it's his natural habitat, so hopefully he'll swim happily home.
