Comedian tells 'special needs' joke at Palin event

Washington (CNN) - In comedy, timing is everything. And minutes before Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and parent of a child with Down syndrome, made her much-anticipated speech in Iowa, Los Angles-based comedian Eric Golub told a joke that compared liberal political ideology to “special needs children.”

After commending Palin on raising her son Trig while balancing other responsibilities, Golub made the analogy.

“For that reason alone, the left should worship Sarah Palin and adopt her as one of their own,” Golub said. “Because the leftist haters are an entire political ideology of special needs children.”
Golub continued by saying that liberals are needy and feel entitled.

“And unlike Trig, they aren't very lovable,” Golub said. “All you hear from them is give me, give me, I need, I need, I want, I deserve, I’m entitled – no you don’t.”

1. Waiting for Palin to condemn Golub's joke.
I realize that Hell may freeze over first.

7. Worse, she thought it was just peachy
It's only offensive when a Democrat calls somebody special needs.

Even if they are.

23. In fairness, there is a difference between saying "special needs" and saying "fucking retards."
But, Golub and Emmanuel do seem to share a hatred of the left.

Meh. RWers hate the left. In other news, water, wet.

3. So, if the left is "special needs", what does that say about the right?
Edited on Sun Sep-04-11 10:28 AM by ck4829
Polls say people agree with liberal ideas more than conservative ones.

Who was right about tax cuts not spurring job growth?

Who was right about Iraq?

And didn't Sarah Palin, oh I don't know, LOSE in 2008 and then quit being governor not long after that?

21. There's nothing very special about ...
... "I hate you.", "You can't make me.", and "Mine, mine, mine!". Those pretty much sum up the "needs" expressed by the conservatives: pretty standard stuff ...

... if it's coming from a two-year-old.

I enjoy a good offensive joke as much as anyone, but he left the funny out of this one.

5. Eric Golub
Edited on Sun Sep-04-11 10:48 AM by Djmcs11
Eric Golub is also, or was, a prolific contributor at Andrew Breitbart's sites, specifically Big Hollywood. The Breitbart people eviscerated Wonkette and went after their advertising, with some success, for making fun of Trig Palin. Of course, they are silent so far on Golub.

Golub has a couple of pieces on Palin in the Washington Times independent blogging section. First, a couple of weeks ago, he writes a gushing piece about meeting Palin for the first time. Yesterday, after being a part of the warm-up act, he has written a defense of his "jokes". http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/tygrrrr-express/2011/sep/3/sarah-palin-lights-iowa/ I question his motives in writing the first piece. He's a warm-up act 2 weeks after meeting her? As if he was some kind of completely unassociated blogger. Are these warm-up acts paid?

He also, in his book, says the best way to win an Oscar is to play a "retard".

Golub, like many comedians, uses the same routine repeatedly and has used this "joke" before. However, if you watch a couple of his bits on youtube or wherever he doesn't change it up at all. Weirdly, word for word exactly the same at every event.

He didn't ask for any of this.

He's not a prop, he's not a weapon to be used against the other side. He's a child.

Very inappropriate, and if she had any type of integrity, she would have called him out on it.

I wonder how many people in the crowd, fell down, rolling on the group laughing? This is the same crowd that would probably boo Jon Stewart.

18. yet Family Guy and David Letterman can't trash Palin?
The Feb. 2010 episode of Family Guy, "Extra Large Medium", had controversy with a character with down syndrome and a reference to Sarah Palin. David Letterman also got in trouble with a joke misconstrued as a Yankees baseball player having sex with Palin's younger daughter rather than adult daughter Bristol.

28. I don't think he was trying to be funny, he was cheerleading hate
In the YouTube video upthread, the few lines that could have been considered jokes were ignored by the crowd. The only reactions he got were growls to hate filled lines. If his job was to make them laugh, he failed miserably. I think he was there just to fill some time and to get the people responding any any manner.

31. I couldn't start laughing.
I did watch because I never take anyone else's word when I can see for myself, but I waited for something funny...and waited...

The Trig joke would be harmless if Palin hadn't lost it over similarly harmless ones by people she doesn't like. If she doesn't at least condemn it, then she's being hypocritical.
