Sorry Kids, President Obama Backs Down On Ozone Standards

President Obama Backs Down On Ozone Standards
By Stephen Lacey and Joe Romm
September 2, 2011

UPDATE 1: Obama’s decision to do nothing on ozone pollution is actually worse than what the Bush-Cheney Administration proposed. See Brad Plumer’s WashPost piece, “Did the White House double-cross its supporters on the smog rule?”

UPDATE 2: I was on Keith Olbermann’s Countdown tonight on this and will post a video when it’s available.

The administration’s fecklessness is no doubt based on some crass political (mis)calculation. But in fact the standard would not have any noticeable negative impact on the economy and, if anything, would have driven investment and innovation even in the short term. The biggest uncertainty businesses have now is “what the heck will Obama do next?” since the President appears to have no coherent and consistent philosophy guiding his economic and environmental decisions.

And as for how this plays out with the voters, it’s one more move that disempowers a core constituency. It also misses a chance to win over the biggest block of independent voters, those who want to preserve clean air and clean water for their kids. As a May Pew poll found, 71% of Americans say “This country should do whatever it takes to protect the environment.”

Yes, I know ozone at low altitudes is not the same thing as the ozone layer..

14. I am jealous of his beauty, just like Paul Krugman.*
* Yes, someone actually said here that Krugman was critical of Obama's economic policies because Obama was so dreamy he surely got a lot of girls in college, while Krugman, being a big geek, surely got few or no girls in college, thus engendering a fierce, undying jealousy.

This is what personality cultism does to people.

17. That has to be one of the most pathetic statements I've seen on DU.
And the fact that we're on a thread where people are saying "clean air = pony" completely blows my mind...:wow:

9. Sorry kids, the country fucked up by electing idiots to congress,
so any and everything falls by the wayside as a president with no congressional support tries to stand between the economy and the abyss ... while the republicans are pulling on the ropes to pull the economy over the cliff and the democrats stand by and whimper.

Kids, it's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. Enjoy the National Parks while you can, they won't be here much longer. Enjoy living in a house while you still can, if you're parent(s) is/are unemployed - you'll be on the street soon enough. Oh and make sure you learn your Bible verses for your public school class every day.

It is so much worse than an ozone regulation, folks. And the blame goes far beyond one person.

27. These were administrative agency REGULATIONS, over which O had TOTAL control
There is NO reason he caved on this except big bucks from the American Petroleum Institute.

On top of that he stalled court action by environmental groups for TWO YEARS by PROMISING THEM HE AND HIS ADMINISTRATION WOULD PUT THESE NEW REGULATIONS IN PLACE.

but he is utterly powerless.

No, it doesn't make any sense to me either, but that's what people have been telling me for a while now.

Gotta keep those Citizens United/corporate bucks rolling in to meet his $billion dollar campaign goal!

everything is on the table.

A copy of the LETTER Sunstein send to the EPA

The letter on the above link explains WHY President Obama had the rule sent back to the EPA for reconsideration.

40. Me and my wife are out

We'll work for good Democrats in local races, but we're finished with Obama (me more than her, she still likes him...i like him, but dont believe in him).

He is a fraud. And if a far-right party gets elected, maybe that will illuminate what they are about.

Us Dems sit around and let the fascists define who we are and our national party doesn't do shit, but bend over and make apologies whenever one of our guys actually calls bullshit.

Im tired of it...I voted third party in 1992 and again in 2000 (before I was fully Liberal)...and I'll do it again in 2012.
