take this short test to find out where your Political Compass lies, & post your results, if you want
The test:

http://politicalcompass.org/test

--------------------------------------------------------

My results: (pretty much where I expected to fall, in the left-libertarian, anarcho-socialist/syndicalist camp)

http://politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-6.62&soc=-9.03

New Politics, published since 1986 as a semi-annual, follows in the tradition established in its first series (1961-1978) as an independent socialist forum for dialogue and debate on the left. It is committed to the advancement of the peace and anti-intervention movements. It stands in opposition to all forms of imperialism, and is uncompromising in its defense of feminism and affirmative action. In our pages there is broad coverage of labor and social movements, the international scene, as well as emphasis on cultural and intellectual history.

Above all, New Politics insists on the centrality of democracy to socialism and on the need to rely on mass movements from below for progressive social transformation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Political rights do not originate in parliaments; they are, rather, forced upon parliaments from without. And even their enactment into law has for a long time been no guarantee of their security. Just as the employers always try to nullify every concession they had made to labor as soon as opportunity offered, as soon as any signs of weakness were observable in the workers' organizations, so governments also are always inclined to restrict or to abrogate completely rights and freedoms that have been achieved if they imagine that the people will put up no resistance.

Even in those countries where such things as freedom of the press, right of assembly, right of combination, and the like have long existed, governments are constantly trying to restrict those rights or to reinterpret them by juridical hair-splitting. Political rights do not exist because they have been legally set down on a piece of paper, but only when they have become the ingrown habit of a people, and when any attempt to impair them will meet with the violent resistance of the populace .

Where this is not the case, there is no help in any parliamentary Opposition or any Platonic appeals to the constitution."

28. I suspect most on DU do, as for the party as a whole, I did the test 10 more times, plugging in
what I would characterize as centrist Democrats answers (based on hundreds of conversations dealing with the very subjects of the questions), and the end result was either very slightly left or very slightly right, 2/3rds of the time slightly authoritarian. This is the same results I came up with for a slightly right Swedish position.

Here is where I think the average slightly leftish Swede would fall:

http://www.politicalcompass.org/printablegraph?ec=-6.75&soc=-5.74

Interesting that this (the Swedish average) mirrors very closely so many on here on DU.

I am slightly more libertarian (and maybe a bit more left) than many here in my country.

links to non-right wing libertarian sources and philosophers/political scientists.

It is so frustrating that even on the so-called 'left' in the USA, the black/white, "little-to-no grey" schema is so alive and well.

The Tea-Party, Koch brothers funded co-opting of the word libertarian is a sick, corporatist joke, and many in the Libertarian (Big L) Party, although they despise the fake Tea Party, also endorse overly corporatist measures too (albeit much less than the Tea-Baggers or mainstream Democrats or mainstream Republicans).

The one thing I do agree with (in terms of some on the actual libertarian Right in the USA), is their absolute hatred of empire.

The co-opted Tea Baggers are, for the vast part, completely against any cutbacks in military expenditures. They are a sham, and it is so unfortunate that mainstream corporate media in the USA frames them as the main face of libertarianism.

38. I unfortunately have to give those fucking Koch brothers credit, they took a viable force and really
co-opted the entire thing. The Tea-Baggers are cartoon thugs, and they have chocked off all legitimate libertarian (right-libertarian mostly, as left-libertarian is not even in the ball park, most Americans think left and libertarian are 2 utterly incapable things) debate, and made it a taboo subject in a multitude of ways for many election cycles to come, I fear.

The original Tea Party was founded in 2006 by Tom Knapp, http://www.indytruth.org/pblog/index.php?entry=entry080620-185101 and gained many follows from the Ron Paul supporters over the next 2 years. But by 2009, the Koch bots had infiltrated and re-branded so much of the platform into typical foolish corporate pro-war, anti-gay, pro-security state claptrap.

66. Chillin' with Ghandi and Mandela too...
It's typically where I have always hung around with this test, always left, and always below center on the authortarian/anarchistic line.

Sadly in some areas DU members have got no choice but to vote for an authoritarian and right wing candidate... it's how much either way they go.
