Obama pulls back proposed smog standards, in victory for business

President Obama abruptly pulled back proposed new national smog standards Friday morning, overruling the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to compel states and communities nationwide to reduce local air pollution in the coming years or face federal penalties.

The move represented a win for the business community, which had lobbied to postpone new restrictions on ground-level ozone—known as smog—until 2013 in light of the current economic downturn.

In a statement, Obama praised EPA administrator Lisa P. Jackson’s effort to improve the nation’s air quality, but said he had asked her to withdraw the draft standards since they were scheduled to be reconsidered two years from now anyway.

“Work is already underway to update a 2006 review of the science that will result in the reconsideration of the ozone standard in 2013,” Obama said. “Ultimately, I did not support asking state and local governments to begin implementing a new standard that will soon be reconsidered.”

20. When I first read that I could've sworn it said Hoover... my bad
:hi:

My Dad voted for Ike, being a WWII veteran, and did nothing but sing his praises -- although he (my dad) was a Democrat when he was sober.

But I think you missed the sarcasm / irony in my post. Oh, well.

"It seems that Obama's environmental vision could become lost in the smog."

3. A victory for business -- no. A victory for...
...the Democratic senators, Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller, from West Virginia, and Mark Begich, from Alaska, and Clair McCaskill from Missouri, and Max Baucus from Montana, and Carl Levin - yep, reliable, liberal Carl Levin -- of Michigan, who have been lobbying for this for over a year.

7. Can someone trot out the list of accomplishments?
Because it looks like we will have to cross one off from the list. :wtf:

12. I thought we had a list of President Obama's accomplishments on another thread...if not....

He dealt with Osama Bin Laden. He gets credit for that.

He will claim health care reform is an accomplishment. I feel it is a mixed bag.
I want a single payer, national health system. Health care is a right, not a privilege.

I believe the recession would have been deeper without the stimulus. This is a mixed bag.
I believe economists said the stimulus wasn't big enough.

He rescued the auto industry. He should get credit for this.
Personally, I believe the auto industry woes were caused by the banks crashing the economy.
People don't want to buy cars when their homes are being foreclosed.
People can't borrow when money is tight.

We should also start a list of negatives...but I don't feel like starting a list.
The Republicans don't need my help listing President Obama's negatives.
President Obama should already know his list of negatives; he's smart...he has smart people around him.
