Accept the Tar Sands or else!
I have been watching with interest how some of our American citizens have been arrested and jailed for protesting the Obama Administrations view on people protesting the tar sands project. I've seen these people jailed for an entire weekend, for the judge couldn't hear the case until Monday, This after they had been told that the worse they would face is a hundred dollar fine, so they proceeded with the protest on a Friday night. Yeah, I know that ignorance of the law is no excuse, but why isn't informing of that same law to be same? Simply, the cops could've told these people that getting arrested on a Friday meant that jail time would last through Monday! The cops and those in charge choose not to. They decided to use the Patriot Act as a punishment for protest. That's exactly what the use of this act is, a punishment for protest. The voice of the people is slowly silenced. Only the voices of the rich are being heard. How long can this go on before the people raise up? Frankly, Americans are not that stupid. The time is coming.

4. It gets put in to tankers and shipped from the west coast of Canada to whomever...
or they get put in oil trucks and shipped through the US.

The oil pipeline eliminates all of that, but the environmental cost of 1) to the areas the pipeline gets built through is incalculable 2) it continues the on going "Superfund" site at Fort McMurray that is destroying that area's land and water.

11. This stuff has been exported to the US for decades
The US already imports more than 400,000 barrels a day through the Enbridge system. This might be the flavor of the month issue for the pot bangers but Suncor began production in 1967.

3. So your saying
They couldn't bail themselves out on Friday night? I thought anyone arrested would only go in front of a judge if they didn't bail themselves out.

7. In Minnesota threre is a mandatory 72 hour hold.
Crazy as it seems in the land of freedom, if you get picked up for anything you are there for 3 days and Sunday don't count.

5. I think that people
need to be willing to spend more than a day in jail. The idea that people will be discouraged by spending a weekend, a week, or more, should be an error belonging only to those attempting to discourage us.

6. Agreed...
It is hard but some are going to have to make very real sacrifices - a day in jail is nothing compared to the suffering that someone like Mandela went through.
