Palin Knew What She Was Saying
'Blood Libel' comment was likely used to fire up pro-Israel evangelicals.

But, as is often the case, Palin is likely being underestimated and, perhaps, misunderstood. It's highly unlikely that she threw an incendiary term out there without knowing what it means, and it's even less likely she did so in an effort to promote anti-Semitism.
Here' s another theory of the case: The former Alaska governor was likely trying to send a signal to her evangelical Christian supporters who are, in fact, deeply pro-Israel (although many Jews are wary of their support for the Zionist state, seeing them as more interested in the Rapture than a healthy Jewish nation).

Palin was likely aligning herself with pro-Israel evangelicals by identifying with Jews, not by insulting them, although that was surely the effect given the widespread bristling at her remarks.

After all, it's not the first time Palin has aligned herself subtly with Jews. She has noted that after her election as governor in 2006, her childhood pastor suggested that she take the Bible's Queen Esther as a role model. Esther was a beauty queen who became a fierce protector of the Jewish people. Palin is comfortable in the role of Esther, and many of her evangelical supporters see her in that guise, describing her as Esther-like. The multi-faith website Beliefnet called this phenomenon "Esther-mania."

1. Who knows if she did but someone presidential should know what they are saying
I suspect the guts of Sarah Palin is a gaggle of speech writers who do all her dirty work. She can't be bothered to understand the words she says

2. I just saw her on tv today
She looks a bit scared; not as arrogant.

I am not sure which church she belongs to, but dollars to donuts this term means something else to them than to the rest of humanity in what libs like to call the reality-based world.

4. I don't think she has speechwriters. Her whole purpose is to inflame
She is kind of like Loughner who wanted to cause chaos.

3. But what she did today, intentional or not, doesn't help her one bit.
That is why I think she had no clue what she was saying.

It doesn't benefit her.

8. Thank you, at least one person seems to get what I'm saying.
Regardless of her aspirations to politics and power, this is no way to go about it.

She has lost.

5. Hmmm... she's quite clever, but she's not educated.
I doubt she knew it's historical meaning.

9. Nope. She had no clue what she was saying
She's a lot of things, but subtle is not one of them.

She, and whomever wrote the speech (Tawd?) latched onto the concept of 'libel' because of course, she's clearly the victim here. Then they needed to add a bit of zing to it. Lightbulb goes on. BLOOD libel! Yep, catchy, patriotic, appealing-to-the-lizard brain. Definitely a million times more serious than an ordinary libel. Makes her a million times more the victim.

The 'I, me, my' is very strong in this one.

12. My thoughts go back and forth between
maybe she didn't know what it was, the that phrase has the kind of zing to it that a lot of RWer crazy asses love to use and hear - "blood libel" - stuff that comes out of the King James' bible...these phrases sound kinda serious and mystic...we all know Jesus walked around saying, Thee and Thou and "pledge my troth"...

11. pro israel solely to cause the rapture,
and the final solution to those jews who did not become christian fast enough.

It is slightly more complex than simply supporting israel. There is a whole biblical, end of times, crap to deal with.

14. Actually, she picked it up from the current RW crop of talking points.
Glenn Reynolds used it on Monday in a WSJ comment piece, and several other RW bloggers were already using it before he did.

In fact, Tony Blankley used it in 2008 -- so it's been out there for awhile. Sarah didn't pick it out of thin air (i.e. what passes for her though process).

Sorry, I don't have the link, but there's a post around DU somewhere that gives the whole history of the RW usage of that term.
