CLARENDON — Officials say two highway workers have been rescued by helicopter after flash flooding in North Clarendon.
Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Robert Stirewalt says the contractors were repairing damage to a bridge that occurred during Tropical Storm Irene when a new flash flood knocked out the approaches to it on Thursday.
He says the workers were stranded on a sandbar on the Cold River near U.S. 4.
Art Howard of Regional Ambulance Service of Rutland says the two men were hoisted out of the water by helicopter Thursday evening.
According to police scanner chatter, Colchester Technical Rescue was on the way to the scene. The responders asked for directions around closed roads on the way south to Clarendon.
A flash flood warning was issued Thursday afternoon for parts of Bennington, Rutland, Windham and Windsor counties.
