Where do Whoopie Pies Come From?
From Smithsonian.com

Last week I went to Maine for a long weekend that turned into a very short one. With the Irene forecasts looking dire for the Northeast, my husband and I decided to drive home to the Adirondacks on Saturday, a day early. (As it turned out, the storm was much worse in our mountain town than along the coast.)

The compressed itinerary meant I had less than 36 hours to achieve my gastronomic goals: to eat as much lobster and other fresh seafood as possible and to try a whoopie pie. The whoopie pie—not so much a pie as a cakey chocolate cookie-and-frosting sandwich—is now the official treat of Maine, as of an April act of the state legislature.

2. Where do Whoopi Pies come from?
Maybe Ms. Goldberg is a baker on the side, after she's done hosting 'The View'?

3. I loved whoopie pies when I was little.
My mom used to make them all the time (half of her family was from Maine). I used to be able to trade them for ANY kids food at lunch...everyone loved them. Growing up in California, very few kids had ever seen one before.

As an aside, my dad also used to crack jokes about "making whoopie" with my mom when I was little. I thought he was talking about pies :dunce:

7. I always associated them with the Pennsylvania Dutch & offshoots.
They were always a big item at markets operated by Mennonites, Amish, etc. along the Mid-Atlantic coast. They're good, but not nearly as spectacular as another item featured at such markets, and apotheosized by my esposo as The World's Most Nearly Perfect Food:

The Pretzel Cheese Dog

Sprinkle home-made cheese on a flat square of pretzel dough. Roll it around a homemade hotdog. Bake it to a pretzelly brown crustiness, spray it lightly and sprinkle on big salt crystals, then keep in a warmer for at least two minutes to allow it to dry. You can't keep it in the warmer any longer because the line of guys waiting to buy one, two or three (or more) is already stretching past the funnel cake booth, past the pies-and-baked goods booth, and clear to the parking lot.

amusedly,
Bright

8. When I was little my mom would make
pies about every other week or so. Any pie dough that was left, she would cut out round shapes, put some kind of homemade fruit preserves in, fold over and bake. We,as kids, called these "penny pies" because she once sold some at a local school bake sale for...you got it.. a penny apiece. Today they are called pop tarts, except ours were a bit smaller and waaaay better.
