We're about to get clobbered by this monster in Japan
Western Japan where I live looks like its going to get smashed by a big powerful typhoon in about 24-36 hours.

This one has me a little nervous. I hope our house can hold it together.

I will keep you informed as things, err... develop.

3. Good grief, that thing is humongous...
That's a super typhoon. Lived in Guam about 20 years ago and endured about 8 typhoons, 2 of which were super Typhoons. You have my sympathy - I know the damage these monster storms can create. Stay safe!!!

5. please keep us posted
We just finished hosting 2 dear students from Shimane University in Western Japan who lived with us for a month in California while studying here. They returned to Japan on Sunday. Now I'm worried about this for them. I'll look for your updates. Good luck and stay safe!

I wasn't aware of this until I spotted this posting. Thanks for the alert. Stay safe!

Lord, doesn't anyone see the need to get off our unsustainable pathway?

14. Moving slowly, so the rainfall could be big - a foot in 24 hours
Tropical storm Talas, packing winds of up to 180 km per hour (112 mph) at its centre, was moving north-northwest at 10 km per hour (6 mph), the speed of a bicycle, as of noon (0300 GMT) on Thursday and could make landfall in western Japan on Saturday, Japan's Meteorological Agency said.
...
An agency spokeswoman said it was hard to predict the impact of the storm, but up to 300 mm (11.8 inches) of rain was forecast for Tokyo and surrounding areas in the 24-hour period to midday on Friday, compared with the average rainfall for the whole of September in the region of 209 mm (8.2 inches).

Given the slow speed at which Talas is moving, Japan is likely to see heavy rainfall for a prolonged period of time, she said.

16. Update: It turned out to be a bit of a dud.
The typhoon is crawling at about 8 miles per hour and doesn't look like a typhoon anymore.

We still might have problems with lots of rainfall, but sorry for the panicky OP...

22. UPDATE: Not such of a dud after all.
There are some evacuations going on on the mainland in Himeji.

My two brother-in-laws and their families evacuated due to the Ichikawa river threatening to flood.

21. The don't go for the drama here.
They really do report natural disasters unemotionally here.

Even during the great tsunami in March which killed 20,000 people, the coverage never reached the hysterical levels regularly seen on US tv.
