Chris Christie: Send aid now; cut later

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie reacted angrily to a fight brewing in Washington over whether Hurricane Irene disaster aid may need to be offset by federal spending cuts.

“Our people are suffering now, and they need support now. And they can all go down there and get back to work and figure out budget cuts later,” the Republican governor told a crowd in the flood-ravaged North Jersey town of Lincoln Park.

Christie said no such discussion was held when help went to Joplin, Mo., where a deadly May tornado damaged 7,500 homes.

“We need the support now here in New Jersey, and that’s not a Republican or a Democratic issue,” Christie said, according to NorthJersey.com

2. Christie's career is over.
Republicans are not allowed to say pay now cut later.

7. It must really suck for these people
when reality comes up and bites them in their more than ample asses.

And for the record, I do agree that this should be a non-partisan issue. It's a people issue.

I'd love right now for every Dem in the House to do a one minute special session speach and call out each and every one those rat bastard Rep who want to tie disaster funding with budget cuts.

9. Actually, I believe (but could be wrong) that the issue was raised re: Joplin
and if you didn't object to the rank injustice of the discussion then, but do now when you need help, then you are, by definition, a hypocrite.

(And by "you" I mean Christie, not my DU friends and family, of course. Just in case it wasn't 100% clear.)

12. it was

On Sunday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) reiterated his position that disaster relief funds for the tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri must be paid for with cuts to other programs. "Congress will find the money," Cantor said on CBS' “Face the Nation” "And it will be offset."

Christie, like many cons, have selective memory. But I guess we should be glad at least he acknowledges human suffering.

14. Thank you for the link!
Re: Christie, I think he's acknowledging his own re-election chances are dependent on fighting for the money we need in NJ. Which is cool, I guess. Better to know which side your bread is buttered on than not.

However, I hope that if he ever decides to run for National office that the good people of Missouri remember that when it wasn't in his obvious self interest to help, he was very content to hang them out to dry.

I believe anyone aspiring to National office should have a sense of duty to and respect for all Americans, regardless of region.

13. Governors, even Repub ones, tend to look out for their states more directly
than Reps and Senators. See also: Dave Heineman of Nebraska opposing the oil pipeline.
